Holiday Time at Disneyland
Normally the big news of early November is the start of the holiday season at Disneyland, which brings the return of the beloved Christmas Fantasy Parade, the nighttime Believe… in Holiday Magic fireworks, and the extremely popular Festival of Holidays event at Disney California Adventure.
This year the start of the season is somewhat overshadowed this week by the opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disneyland, but there’s so much going on at both parks to make it a very special weekend even if you don’t get anywhere near Critter, erm, Bayou Country.
On the entertainment front, Disneyland last week announced three new seasonal additions.
At Disney California Adventure, “Mirabel’s Gifts of the Season,” based on the film “Encanto,” takes place near the entrance to the Paradise Gardens Park. Based on concept art it’s a small production with dancers and mobile props, a features an appearance by Mirabel and performers who resemble but are not quite her sisters. Sing-along shows are always fun for young fans of the films, and I wouldn’t expect this to be any different.
At night, a new show titled “A Musical Christmas with Mariachi Alegría de Disneyland & Miguel!” will bring song and characters to Buena Vista Street. Both of these new offerings are presented only Monday through Friday, so you may need to plan a special trio to catch them.
The popular Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party is returning for 2024, but will only run on Saturday and Sundays this year.
Daily holiday entertainment includes Mickey’s Happy Holidays processional, the Holiday Toy Drummers, World of Color – Season of Light, and the nightly Buena Vista Street Holiday Treet Lighting. You should also check the daily entertainment and events calendar closer to your visit to see which groups might be appearing as part of the Festival of Holidays during your visit. There are shows scheduled throughout the day at the Paradise Garden Bandstand, as well as performances on the Backlot Stage.
When Santa visits Disney California Adventure between November 15 and December 24, you’ll find him back in the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. after Santa leaves on Christmas Eve, Santa Goofy will take his place for the rest of the season.
Over at Disneyland, the Fantasyland Theater will serve as Santa’s home base during the holidays in the new Holiday Fun with Santa and Friends. Just as with Pixar Fest, this area will offer character appearances, photo opportunities, crafts and entertainment. I’m glad to see the large, empty venue used for something during the holidays, but I’d also love a new permanent stage show here. I also wonder about the logistics of queing hundreds of people hoping to see Santa without otherwise overwhelming whatever other offerings are to be had. This looks like a great opportunity to use a virtual queue or issue return times.
The big holiday spectaculars – the parade and the fireworks – need no reminders, but be sure to make time to seek out the smaller offerings too. There’s the “it’s a small world” Holiday Lighting at dark each night, followed by lighting of the tree on Main Street, U.S.A.
Wintertime Enchantment at Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle brings pre-fireworks projections and snowfall to three locations around Disneyland, and the Disney Holiday Dance Party is a blast for character-seekers of all ages.
If you’re visiting Disneyland on several nights this season, make sure to take one night to catch the nightly fireworks from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, to enjoy the Fire of the Rising Moons version.
Seasons Eatings
On the food side of the holiday celebration, Disneyland is coming in with more than one hundred new drinks and dishes this year, and I don’t even know where to begin to decide what to try first. The company posted two Foodie Guides last week – one for the general holiday season, and one specific to the Festival of Holidays. Each list includes a handful of returning favorites, but the menus are just packed with new must-try items. If it’s gingerbread-spiced, peppermint-crusted, sugar-dusted, chocolate-covered or cranberry-spiked, you’ll find it on these menus.
Of course the Sip & Savor Pass is back for the season, and Disney is again offering customers the option to purchase a four-credit or an eight-credit pass. Pricing has not been released, so we’ll crunch the numbers next week. We have noted that the prices of Festival Marketplace entrees have increased again, topping out at $9.50 for some items, so we expect the pass to be $2 or $3 higher as well. As was the case last year, the pass will be valid for sample-sized portions of entrees from restaurant locations other than the seven Festival Marketplace booths, so look for signs advising you of other eligible items.
Disney collectible novelties are always a huge hit, and this year it seems there are more popcorn buckets, souvenir sippers, straw clips and glow cubes than ever. If you’re on the hunt for one of these treasures, be sure to check to see if the item is available through Mobile Order at participating locations and save yourself a potentially long wait in line. Disney is even setting up pop-up mobile order locations on select dates to handle the demand.
Tiana’s Big Week
This is opening week for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disneyland, which opens to the public on Friday, November 15 following weeks of previews for cast members, Imagineer and Disney Magic Key holders. The final Magic Key preview will take place on Tuesday, November 12 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Media previews begin November 13, and Disneyland park closes at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday for the event.
To repeat what we published last week. Disneyland has announced that there will be no standby queue used for the attraction during the opening period, and the ride will not offer Lightning Lane Single Pass at this time . Instead, there are three ways that Disneyland visitors can experience the ride on their visit.
Option 1: Virtual Queue – No charge. Just like the virtual queue currently being used during the Magic Key previews, starting November 15 Disneyland visitors will use the Disneyland mobile app to attempt to join the virtual queue to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Guests who have theme park reservations for that day can log into the Disneyland mobile app at 7:00 a.m. to join the virtual queue, while space lasts. Visitors who have already entered either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure that day will have a second opportunity to try to enter the virtual queue at Noon. Guests can enter the virtual queue once per day, so if you are successful at 7:00 a.m. there’s no point in trying again.
We should point out that during the Magic Key previews, all available spots in the virtual queue have filled up in a matter of seconds at each release. While the ride is operating on a reduced schedule, which means fewer possible spots, only a fraction of the people visiting Disneyland right now even have the option of joining the virtual queue. Once the ride opens to the general public, there will be even more people vying for those virtual queue spots. If you’re willing to spend a little extra, you can consider:
Option 2: Lightning Lane Multi Pass – $32 and up. Disney says you “may get quicker entry” (emphasis mine) to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure by purchasing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass upgrade and booking an arrival window for the ride. Again, you can only do this on the day of your visit using the Disneyland mobile app, and only after you have entered the park for the day.
We have no idea how Disney is allocating ride capacity between the virtual queue and Lightning Lane, and there’s never a guarantee that purchasing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass will ensure access to any given ride. Your chances of getting a return window are much better if you try first thing in the morning.
Option 3: Lightning Lane Premier Pass – $400. Introduced two weeks ago, this ultimate upgrade gives you one-time entry to each ride that offers Lightning Lane, without the need to book an arrival time. It’s the closest thing you can get to a guarantee that you’ll get to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (or any of the other 24 Lightning Lane attractions) on a given day, but the ride is still subject to breakdown.
Whatever method you choose, please know that many preview riders have reported getting SOAKED on the new ride, with one describing a “wall of water” that came up and drenched everyone in their boat during the final drop. This ride has always come with a warning that “you may get wet,” but even people who were familiary with Splash Mountain said they were not expecting that much water on the ride.
A friend thought she was ready with a complete change of clothes, but didn’t think of her feet. She spent the rest of her Disneyland day squishing around in soaked socks and shoes. Plan ahead and be prepared. Disney says you can rent a locker or leave your belongings with a non-riding member of your party, and of course is happy to sell a themed towel and waterproof pouch in the gift shop.
Are regulars giving up their Magic Keys for multi-day deals?
At press time, all four levels of Disneyland Resort Magic Keys are still available for new sale, five days after Disneyland resumed sales of their annual pass. New sales had been paused since June, and the passes have sold out in a matter of hours during some past releases. The slow sales may signal a shift by some regular visitors towards making longer but less-frequent trips using multi-day tickets, rather than purchasing a year-long pass.
The cost of all four pass increased by as much as 20% when Disney raised admission prices last month. The top-tier Inspire Key is now $1,749, and is “blocked out” December 21 to January 1 each year. The lowest-cost Imagine Key is available only to Southern California residents, and is $599 per year. That ticket is valid only about 130 days a year, mostly off-season weekdays.
Disneyland has increasingly begun offering special offers on multi-day tickets, like a $225 Southern California residents offer last spring, a $149 three-weekday deal this past June, and two different $50 kids special ticket offers.
Another $50 kids special ticket offer begins January 7, 2025, and we expect Disneyland will release a updated offer for adults to cover the same dates. For some people, timing their visits to take advantage for these special offers may prove to be a better deal than paying for a Magic Key which is blocked out more often than it is vald.
The four Magic Key types and corresponding benefits are described in the Tickets, Discounts and Promotions section below, as are the current ticket offers we know about.
Candy Cane dates and details
The original “viral” Disneyland treat is coming back on select days starting November 29, and we have the the details you need for 2024. If you’re a Magic Key holder, you especially want to make reservations to get yours before the holiday blockouts begin.
In the era before Food Network and social media, the freshly pulled candy canes made at Disneyland were once one of those little Disney gems, known to only a small group of fans. Whether it’s the deceptively simple recipe (the candy canes made in-park contain no preservatives) or just the charm of watching candy makers cook, pull, and shape the canes in front of you, people line up early and wait hours to get one fresh from the Disney candy kitchens.
Prior to the pandemic, the fresh candy canes were first released the day after Thanksgiving, and by 2018 were offered on 28 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. After cutting production to just 14 days last year, there are 17 chances to get the treats in 2024.
The official dates for 2024 are:
- Disneyland Candy Palace – Nov. 29; Dec. 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, and 22.
- Disney California Adventure Trolley Treats – Nov. 30; Dec. 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, and 25.
If you have the luxury of being able to go any day you want, your best bet is to pick a weekday when candy canes are being released at Disney California Adventure, which tends to have lower crowds. Sundays will be the busiest days. With almost all Magic Key passes blocked out December 22, 23 and 25, those should be the best days for non-passholders to get one.
Once you decide when to go, check to see what time the park opens and get to the front gates at least one hour early. Disneyland Resort hotel guests receive early admission at a select park each day, and the gates open 30 minutes before the published time, granting you access to Main Street and/or Buena Vista Street that morning.
As soon as the entrance opens, walk briskly straight to either Trolley Treats or the Main Street Candy Kitchen and look for the cast members who will direct you into a line outside the shop. Once there, you’ll use your phone to join a mobile wait list.
You will receive a text message when it is your turn to return to the shop and purchase your candy cane. Depending on where you are in the virtual queue, you may get a candy cane from the first batch, or you may have to wait until the last batch of the day. If you aren’t one of the first people in line, be prepared to wait as late as 3:00 in the afternoon for the notice to return.
Special note for day guests: On early entry dates, the park gates open at 7:30 a.m. instead of 8:00 on all thes dates noted below. Because you’re also allowed to enter the turnstiles along with resort guests to get to Main Street and/or Buena Vista Street at 7:30, you should be at the entrance gate no later than 7:00 so that you can get into the physical line early enough to sign into the virtual queue.
If you’re a Magic Key holder, we’ve noted the dates each tier can purchase candy canes. Be sure to make a park reservation for the appropriate park. Unfortunately, all of the 2024 dates are once again blackout dates for the Imagine Magic Key pass.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Tickets, Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 9, 2024.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.
