Happy birthday Mickey & Minnie
November 18 is the day Disney celebrates the shared birthdays of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. In past years Disney has hosted a small character cavalcade down Main Street, U.S.A. to commemorate the event. Nothing is posted on the Disneyland entertainment calendar at this time, but if you happen to be visiting the theme park today be sure to keep an eye out.
Tiana splashes down in Bayou Country
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure officially opened at Disneyland last Friday, following a nighttime fête celebrating the West Coast version of the attraction. The ride of course is a retheme of the 1987 attraction Splash Mountain, and now features a new story line which takes place after the events depicted in the animated feature “The Princess and the Frog.”
The decision to replace a ride based on the racially-charged Disney film “Song of the South” with a ride based on a more contemporary–but also not without controversy–tale has been widely debated, with petitions calling for Disney to change their mind and leave Splash Mountain alone. Obviously that didn’t happen, with the Florida version opening earlier this year.
I’ve deliberately stayed away from photos and video of the Walt Disney World ride so as not to spoil the experience here in California. At the risk of angering the “Save Splash Mountain” crowd, I honestly found this update to be enchanting, and nowhere near as shoehorned in as I’d expected based on reaction to the Florida opening.
The audio-animatronics look smooth and realistic, screen-based effects are used in ways that make sense for the story, and the lighting design for entire ride is simply stunning My one complaint after my previews is that the ride moves quite quickly in some places, and I felt like I was rushing through the story beats too fast. That last drop is as much of a rush as always, and I was grateful to have been alone in the log so I didn’t get nearly as drenched as I saw larger groups coming off the ride.
Years ago I had the opportunity to hear Imagineer and Disney Legend Tony Baxter, creator of Splash Mountain, speak about another controversial attraction makeover. At the time, Baxter was in charge of the conversion of Disneyland’s Swiss Family Treehouse into Tarzan’s Treehouse, based on the 1999 animated film. In his comments, Baxter noted that the current generation of young Disneyland visitors had never seen Walt Disney’s “Swiss Family Robinson,” and had no affinity for the story.
Baxter said that, just as earlier generations got to step into the stories of their childhood at Disneyland, like Snow White and Peter Pan, so too did the current generation deserve to experience attractions based on the stories of their childhood, like “Tarzan.”
Baxter last year gave an interview to Zeitgeist Design and Production in which he defended Splash Mountain, and denied that any part of the ride’s storyline was racist or harmful. Setting that aside (a big ask, I know), I wonder if Baxter would at least agree that today’s children have no idea about “Song of the South,” and deserve to have their stories brought to life too. Tony Baxter was notably absent from the grand opening festivities, but I know what I’ll ask him if I ever encounter him again.
Another chance to join Tiana’s virtual queue
Opening day wasn’t all Blue Skies and Sunshine for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, as the ride did not even open until just before Noon, nearly four hours late. The ride also experienced a number of breakdowns during the day, which is just not unusual for a “new” ride – even one which was build in 1987.
As we’ve shared before, there are three ways to access the attraction at this time, but one of them now comes with an extra chance for sucess.
UPDATED Option 1: Virtual Queue – No charge. There is currently no standby line for this attraction. Instead, Disneyland visitors must use the Disneyland mobile app to attempt to join the virtual queue to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
- 7:00 a.m. Guests who have a valid ticket and theme park reservations with Disneyland as the starting park for that day can log into the Disneyland mobile app at 7:00 a.m. to join the virtual queue, while space lasts.
- 12:00 Noon. Visitors who have already entered either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure that day will have a second opportunity to try to enter the virtual queue at Noon, while space lasts.
- **NEW** 4:00 p.m. Visitors who have already entered either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure that day will have a third and final opportunity to try to enter the virtual queue at 4:00 p.m. while space lasts.
Guests can enter the virtual queue once per day, so if you are successful during one of the earlier distributions. there’s no point in trying again. If you weren’t so lucky and you’re willing to spend a little extra, you can consider:
Option 2: Lightning Lane Multi Pass – $32 and up. Disney says you “may get quicker entry” (emphasis mine) to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure by purchasing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass upgrade and booking an arrival window for the ride. Again, you can only do this on the day of your visit using the Disneyland mobile app, and only after you have entered the park for the day.
We have no idea how Disney is allocating ride capacity between the virtual queue and Lightning Lane, and there’s never a guarantee that purchasing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass will ensure access to any given ride. Your chances of getting a return window are much better if you try first thing in the morning.
Option 3: Lightning Lane Premier Pass – $400. This ultimate upgrade gives you one-time entry to each ride that offers Lightning Lane, without the need to book an arrival time. It’s the closest thing you can get to a guarantee that you’ll get to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (or any of the other 24 Lightning Lane attractions) on a given day, but the ride is still subject to breakdown.
New holiday entertainment debuts at Disney California Adventure
I’ll start with the holiday classic you never knew you were missing: “The Story Time with Deadpool Holiday Special” This seasonal update to the “Story Time with Deadpool” show has the Merc with a Mouth retelling the classic Dickens tale “A Christmas Carol” in his unique way. The show of course begins with a massive plug for Disney+, which Deadpool notes paid to keep the show running through the holidays. “Finally a streaming service that understands quality content.” The show is presented six times a day in the courtyard between the Hyperion Theater and is absolutely worth trying to catch if you can. We missed the opening day, but our friends at DapsMagic posted this photo of the decorated set.

Two brand new shows also opened to the public on Friday, and both are worthy additions to what is already an impressive entertainment lineup for the Festival of Holidays. I recommend these two shows, especially if you have an “Encanto”-obsessed child like I do, or enjoy a lively and heartfelt Mariachi performance.
“Mirabel’s Gifts of the Season” stars Mirabel herself from “Encanto,” plus new friends we didn’t meet in the movie. Isabella, Luisa and Bruno also make guest appearances in the musical, though for reasons I’m sure have to do with union classifications these three characters do not talk, sing or dance.
The 15-minute show manages to cram in the highlights from six hit songs from the “Encanto” soundtrack, and has several cute moments that really make it fun for the audience. Mirabel has a phenomenal voice (which I hope isn’t just a dub from the film), and if the other singers were a little off the first day I blame it on opening-night jitters. The younger members of the crowd were definitely enchanted by the show.
“A Musical Christmas with Mariachi Alegría de Disneyland & Miguel!” combines music, dance, storytelling and a character appearance into a 15-minute pageant. It’s a surprisingly warm show, and the audience was definitely drawn in. The show features Spanish and English songs, often switching between languages mid-song.
Near the end is a lovely sing-along rendition of Noche de paz / Silent Night, during which younger children are invited to join the performers. During the media preview, this show began and ended with a processional down Hollywood Blvd, but you’ll want a good view of the stage to see the entire performance.
Unfortunately both shows share a fatal flaw, in that their viewing areas are so much smaller than they should be. The situation is reminiscent of the first years of “¡Viva Navidad!” and “Mulan’s Lunar New Year,” before each were expanded into larger street productions. I only caught these shows during the media previews, and plan to check back to see if the crowd control measures have (hopefully) changed since opening weekend.
Another unusual thing about these two new shows is that they’re only presented Monday through Friday, and are dark on weekends. There’s absolutely no lack of holiday entertainment at DCA this year, but it seems strange that the two newest productions would not be offered on weekends. I’ll be curious to see if that schedule changes as the holiday season progresses.
If you can’t make it into the parks on weekdays, you can watch the full shows on our YouTube channel.
Disney pauses sales of new Magic Keys
As it turns out, Disney paused sales of new Magic Keys last Tuesday, less than a week after making the annual passports available for sale again. Based on last year’s sales history, we don’t expect to see Magic Keys available for sale again until January, but Disney could always surprise us. With seasonal blockout periods starting next week for some Magic Key tiers and park reservation availability very limited for other tiers, prospective Magic Key customers might do better to take advantage of the Disney+ offer to visit in 2024, and wait for new sales to resume in the spring.
In Case You Missed It
This is a new section of the Update, where we’ll link to articles which ran in the past week rather than reprinting them here in their entirety. That should make the Update a bit faster to read, but also keep you from missing something. In last week’s news:

The holiday shopping season will look a little different in Downtown Disney this year, as three stores are planning their grand openings or re-openings in December. Another shop and four eateries are planned to open this winter, and Disney has provided additional details about three projects opening in 2025.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Tickets, Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 9, 2024.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
