Disneyland Resort Update for November 4, 2024

November 4, 2024 by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

Three ways to the Bayou

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opens on November 15, and Disneyland has announced that there will be no standby queue used for the attraction during the opening period. Instead, there are three ways that Disneyland visitors can experience the ride on their visit.

Disneyland visitors will have three options for boarding Tiana’s Bayou Adventure starting November 15. MousePlanet file photo.

Option 1: Virtual Queue – No charge. Just like the virtual queue currently being used during the Magic Key previews, starting November 15 Disneyland visitors will use the Disneyland mobile app to attempt to join the virtual queue to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Guests who have theme park reservations for that day can log into the Disneyland mobile app at 7:00 a.m. to join the virtual queue, while space lasts. Visitors who have already entered either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure that day will have a second opportunity to try to enter the virtual queue at Noon. Guests can enter the virtual queue once per day, so if you are successful at 7:00 a.m. there’s no point in trying again.

We should point out that during the Magic Key previews, all available spots in the virtual queue have filled up in a matter of seconds at each release. While the ride is operating on a reduced schedule, which means fewer possible spots, only a fraction of the people visiting Disneyland right now even have the option of joining the virtual queue. Once the ride opens to the general public, there will be even more people vying for those virtual queue spots. If you’re willing to spend a little extra, you can consider:

Option 2: Lightning Lane Multi Pass – $32 and up. Disney says you “may get quicker entry” (emphasis mine) to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure by purchasing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass upgrade and booking an arrival window for the ride. Again, you can only do this on the day of your visit using the Disneyland mobile app, and only after you have entered the park for the day.

We have no idea how Disney is allocating ride capacity between the virtual queue and Lightning Lane, and there’s never a guarantee that purchasing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass will ensure access to any given ride. Your chances of getting a return window are much better if you try first thing in the morning.

Option 3: Lightning Lane Premier Pass – $400. Introduced two weeks ago, this ultimate upgrade gives you one-time entry to each ride that offers Lightning Lane, without the need to book an arrival time. It’s the closest thing you can get to a guarantee that you’ll get to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (or any of the other 24 Lightning Lane attractions) on a given day, but the ride is still subject to breakdown.

However, there is still a week of previews on the schedule. Here are the dates and times for the remaining Magic Key previews. In many cases these overlap with cast member previews.

Magic Key holders who have already entered either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on a preview day will have a second opportunity to try to enter the virtual queue at Noon. Magic Key holders can enter the virtual queue once per preview day.

Magic Key sales resume Wednesday

Some fans have waited since June to purchase a new Disneyland Magic Key, and Wednesday may be their last chance for this calendar year.

The Disneyland Resort is set to resume new sales of all four levels of Magic Keys  no earlier than 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6 through the Disneyland website. Buyers can enter the virtual waiting room no earlier than 8:45 a.m. As a returning feature, prospective buyers can sign up to receive an email notification when its their turn to purchase.

During past releases, some Magic Key types have sold out in a matter of hours. Pent-up demand and the pending gift-giving season could see this sale end relatively quickly too.

The cost of the passes increased when Disney raised admission prices earlier this month, at the time affecting only those who wanted to renew their pass. The four Magic Key types and corresponding benefits are described in the Tickets, Discounts and Promotions section below.

Last January, Disney posted a “buying guide” designed to make the online buying process a little easier, so definitely check it out today if you plan to buy a pass Wednesday. While the notify by email option means you don’t need to sit in front of your computer for hours, you will still need to keep an eye on your email, because you only have 10 minutes to return to the site and make your purchase.

World of Color is back

World of Color has reopened following refurbishment, which also means that the World of Color dining package and the World of Color dessert party are both back on the premium experiences menu. Now through November 14, visitors will see World of Color – ONE, the version which debuted in 2023 as part of the Disney100 celebration. Starting on November 15, the holiday-themed World of Color Season of Light will return, and run through January 6, 2025.

New Nighttime Gathering

In September Disney announced a new premium experience would be coming to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in November. Reservations opened last week for the awkwardly named Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo Nighttime Gathering, and while the first meal hasn’t even been served yet, I still have a few thoughts.

The “Falcon Overlook” on the left side of the photo is the new viewing area for the Docking Bay 7 Nighttime Gathering. MousePlanet file photo.

This new offering is based around the fantastic “Fire of the Rising Moons” fireworks alternative at Disneyland. This show takes advantage of the unique location of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in relation to Disneyland’s fireworks launch system to present a completely different show with a Star Wars soundtrack. The soundtrack changes with the Disneyland show, so you’ll hear a different accompaniment to the Mickey’s Mix Magic pyrotechnics than you will during winter when the show is Believe… in Holiday Magic.

“Fire of the Rising Moons” debuted in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at the start of the 2024 Season of the Force celebration, and thankfully not only did Disneyland keep the show on the schedule after that promotion ended, but even enhanced it with the addition of a new R1 series astromech droid named Bard. The show is absolutely worth watching, but I’ve noted that the lower-level viewing area near the Millenium Falcon is small, and you’re likely to get whacked by a lightsaber if you’re not careful.

Until now, I’ve tried watch the fireworks from a small patio outside Docking Bay 7, which had a few tables and chairs and offers a good view of the show. Disney apparently calls this area the Falcon Overlook, and it’s now the standing room only viewing area for this new dining package.

The way this works is you make a reservation to arrive at Docking Bay 7 between 8:00 and 8:30 p.m. Once checked in, you can upgrade your experience by purchasing an adult beverage (I.D. required), or collecting the included “rations” and beverages.

Galaxy’s Edge provides a unique view of the Disneyland fireworks. MousePlanet file photo.

The meal includes:

  • Fried Cheeseburger Croquette Bites
  • Apricot goat cheese topped with honey, za’atar, sour cherry gel, cheddar, Monterey jack and pita chips
  • Dragon fruit yogurt topped with lychee popping pearls and fresh blueberries
  • Cream puff pair of Black Caf cold brew and blue milk flavors
  • Unlimited fountain beverages
  • Specialty nonalcoholic beverages in a souvenir novelty cup straight from the defunct Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser in Walt Disney World.

After you have your rations you can sit in or near Docking Bay 7, or go out onto a patio to dine. Just before 9:30 p.m., you’ll head to the standing viewing area for the fireworks.

The price is $89 per person, which seems surprisingly high, especially when compared to some other upcharge options. The same $89 gets you a four-course meal at the Blue Bayou and a reserved viewing area for Fantasmic, or dinner at River Belle Terrace where you can watch Fantasmic from your table. There are also less expensive Fantasmic dining package options. The Christmas Fantasy Parade dining package is $52, and I should also note that most of these offer a lower price for children 3-9. Over at Disney California Adventure, the World of Color dining packages are all $69 or less.

That said, there are at least two other questionable ways to spend $89 at the Disneyland Resort – the Tomorrowland Skyline Terrace experience, and the World of Color dessert party both come to mind. The Tomorrowland offering lost its way when the hot menu selection was replaced with a “chilled selection dining package,” but at least you can stay in that spot all night if you want. The World of Color dessert party seems like a nice experience, but I’d rather spend less and enjoy dinner and dessert at Storytellers Cafe before the show.

$89 for a Star Wars snack and a souvenir cup seems absurd to me, but perhaps I’m not the target market here. There are certain to be enough folks willing to try it once to keep it going for several months, and I note it looks like New Year’s Eve is already booked out.

Honestly, I think my biggest objection is that Disney came across this small little spot where people had found they could sit and enjoy the fireworks, and moved to monetize it. This simple free thing is no longer free, and that’s a trend I’m increasingly growing to resent.

Reservations are open now through the Disneyland website, and it appears the first public experience is Friday, November 8.

Better Together parade making a comeback

According to audition notices posted last week, the “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!” parade will be returning to the Disneyland Resort sometime in the near future. The parade ran at Disney California Adventure during spring and early summer 2024 as part of the Pixar Fest promotion, and ended its run in July. The parade incorporated several units from the 2018 version of the Pixar Play Parade, and introduced three new units from recent Pixar films – “Soul” (2020), “Luca” (2021) and “Turning Red” (2022).

Disney is casting performers for the return of the Better Together parade. MousePlanet file photo.

The casting call is looking for performers to portray the five members of the fictitious boy band 4*Town from the Pixar film “Turning Red,” as well as the father and three best friends of the film’s star, Meilin. Disney is also looking to cast the role of Joe Gardner from the Pixar movie “Soul” for the parade’s return.

No timeline was provided in the audition notes, but with final callbacks not until late November, we would not expect to see the parade run until January.

Disneyland last month teased the return of the Paint the Night parade, but no additional details have been released.

Hints about the Disneyland After Dark lineup

It looks like Disneyland plans to bring back at least three Disneyland After Dark events in 2025, but the dates for each have not been confirmed. Last week the Disneyland After Dark landing page on the Disneyland website was updated with a teaser, simply telling visitors they could “look forward” to a return of the events “next year.” This language was added to the Pride Nite, Star Wars Nite and Sweethearts’ Nite events.

As for the Disney Channel Nite, the text was updated to read, “This special salute to beloved shows has concluded. We hope you enjoyed the festivities!” It’s a pretty good guess that event won’t be back in 2025, but Disney is sure to find a new theme to introduce.

You might remember that Disneyland announced almost the entire 2024 festival schedule the first week of December, 2023, giving fans a head start on planning their vacations for the coming year. 2025 marks Disneyland’s 70th anniversary, and we’d love to see the resort publish their schedule in the next few weeks so we all can start marking our calendars. We’ve updated the Resort Events section below with the information we have so far, but we’re still waiting for details about the seasonal celebrations.

2025 Grad Nite schedule

If you’re planning trips to Disneyland in May or early June of 2025, keep in mind that you’ll be visiting during Grad Nite season. For 2025, Grad Nites are scheduled for May 9, 12, 18, 21, 22, 27, 28 and 30; June 1, 4, 6, 8, 11, and 13. These after-hours parties for graduating high school seniors are a rite of passage for many local school districts, but also attract students from out of state.

Participating groups have three ticket options. Many schools come just for the after-hours private party inside Disney California Adventure, which closes to the public at 9:00 p.m. each event night. Other schools opt to spend the day at Disney California Adventure, and then stay for the private grad nite event.

Some students splurge on a ticket that includes park-hopper access to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks during regular operating hours, and then head to their private party in Disney California Adventure at 9:00 p.m.

Schools that booked packages with theme park admission can choose to arrive whenever they wish during their Grad Nite event. Some arrive right at park opening to maximize their time, while others arrive later due to travel time or other activities. If you visit on a Grad Nite day, you’ll see the parks get busier as the day goes on, especially at Disney California Adventure.

Of course, Grad Nites event dates are not the only times that the Disneyland Resort is crowded with student groups. The last weeks of school are popular times for class trips, something that Disney actively encourages through special pricing and activities for school groups. Those visits won’t appear on any calendar, but are a fact of Disney life during this season.

With so many schools on year-round calendars now, you should consider the period between March and mid-June as one big, hazy spring-break-into-graduation season. So while the Grad Nite calendar can give you an idea of when the most high school seniors will be on property, there’s no way to know when a school district from Central California is sending its ninth graders for their own promotion celebration.

This and That…

…The 2024 Candlelight Ceremony and Processional will be held at Disneyland on Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8, with two performances each night. As per usual, Disneyland has not announced who will be the celebrity narrator for this annual production.

…The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure is now closed through November 22 for refurbishment.

…We now have a reopening date for the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment. The ride closes November 18, and will reopen on Friday, December 13.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Tickets, Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 9, 2024.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (833) 618-0536 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.

Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.
