Disneyland Resort Update for October 28, 2024

October 27, 2024 by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

Editor’s Note

I’m glad to be back at the desk this week, and apologize to our readers for last week’s unplanned absence. As much as I love these weekly recaps of everything new in Disneyland and beyond, family always comes first, and last week I was exactly where I needed to be.

A new Bayou Country sign greets visitors as they walk by Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

I did manage to carve out two extremely short visits to Disneyland in a futile efforts to preview Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and catch the opening of Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree. No matter how many years I see it, I can never pass up the opportunity to snap another photo of Sleeping Beauty Castle decorated for Christmas while Halloween decor still blankets Main Street, U.S.A.

Here’s what happens when two holidays collide at Disneyland. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Halloween Time wraps up this week, and then it’s full-steam ahead towards the debut of Bayou Country, the grand opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and the start of the Holdays at Disneyland. 2025 is still two months away, but it’s all going to go by in a flash.

Previews begin for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure

Some Disneyland Resort cast members and Magic Key holders got their first look at the California edition of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure last week, as previews began in Bayou Country. I say some, because admission to the sneak peek is being distributed through Disney’s virtual queue system, and the allotted spaces are snapped up within seconds of release each day.

Previews had not yet started for the day at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and the flume was dry. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Here are the dates and times for the remaining Magic Key previews. In many cases these overlap with cast member previews. Starting this week the previews run a little longer most days, and hopefully more fans will be able to ride before the grand opening on November 15.

As a reminder, Magic Key holders who have theme park reservations for that day can log into the Disneyland mobile app at 7:00 a.m. to join the virtual queue, while space lasts. Magic Key holders who have already entered either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on a preview day will have a second opportunity to try to enter the virtual queue at Noon. Magic Key holders can enter the virtual queue once per preview day.

Regardless of whether they get a spot in the virtual queue, Magic Key holders can pick up a Tiana’s Bayou Adventure poster on preview days, just by presenting their Magic Key at a kiosk near the Fantasyland entrance to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Distribution runs 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on preview days, and supplies are limited.

This time I actually made it into the (backup) virtual queue , but I still wasn’t fast enough to get onto the ride.

High Tea fans, rejoice!

Disneyland made many fans – myself included – very happy last week when they announced a new High Tea offering at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel. Holiday Tea with Santa and Mrs. Claus will be served at the Hearthstone Lounge on select days from December 3 through December 24, 2024. Reservations open October 31, and are certain to sell out quickly. Disneyland has not offered a high tea service since discontinuing a seasonal offering at Steakhouse 55, so this is a lovely addition.

Disney also finally opened reservations for the holiday meals at Goofy’s Kitchen, which start Tuesday, November 19.

Reservations are still available on select dates for Mickey’s Holiday Pajama Party Breakfast at Storyteller’s Cafe at the Grand Californian Hotel, as well as the character-free Storytellers Cafe Holiday Dinner.

Step into the Broken Spell Lounge

In another piece of happy hotel news, the Disneyland Hotel announced a surprise makover of its lobby bar. The newly renamed Broken Spell Lounge sits outside the shuttered Steakhouse 55 location, and features a beautiful new look and updated menu. While the lounge occupies the same footprint, the change in wall coverings, upholstery and lighting have made a dramatic transformation in the space.

About that pricey Lightning Lane Premiere Pass

Ever read a headline and automatically check to make sure it’s not April 1? Or need to re-read a story more than once to make the words make sense? That was my experience after I saw the first posts about Disney’s new Lightning Lane Premiere Pass, which debuted Wednesday at the Disneyland Resort, and will roll out next month in Walt Disney World.

I first thought that Disney had finally announced the annual Lightning Lane add-on that some Magic Key holders and WDW annual passholders have been requesting, and honestly thought $400 was a pretty good deal for frequent visitors. But after the words “per day” swam into focus, I had to go back and read the details a few more times to understand that Disneyland has really just created a $400 skip-the-line pass.

Looking at it another way, you can now bundle Lightning Lane Premier Pass with a one-day park-hopper pass to create a ticket that can run as much as $681 per person.

$681. Per Day. Per Person.

Now, the thing about Disneyland is that absolutely nobody has to buy a ticket to go there, and so if this new offering is completely out of reach or reason for your wallet, you can just ignore it. But I have done a deeper dive into this upgrade, and lay out a case where this new Lightning Lane Premier Pass might actually (gulp) make sense for some visitors.

The Lightning Lane Premier Pass gives you one-time access to the Lightning Lane entrance of any attraction that offers that service. At present there are 13 Lightning Lane Multi Pass attractions at Disneyland, and another 9 at Disney California Adventure. The Premier Pass also includes one-time access to Lightning Lane Single Pass entrance for Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland and Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure, which are not included with the basic Lightning Lane Multi pass and are instead priced separately.

(At this time, Lightning Lane Premier Pass does not include Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which is still in pre-opening previews. A Magic Key holder who purchases the LLPP will need to try their luck with the virtual queue like everyone else.)

At the Disneyland Resort, guests can purchase the ticket up to two days in advance of their arrival. The pass is priced in addition to whatever admission media you have. (You must already have valid admission media and made a theme park reservation for the day you wish to visit before you can add the Premiere Pass). The price is the same whether you have one-park or park-hopper admission, but if you’re already spending $400 here it seems silly that you wouldn’t also have upgraded to a park hopper.

Unlike regular Lightning Lane Multi Pass, which now seems like a bargain starting at $32 per person, there is no wait before someone with the Lightning Lane Premier Pass can jump into the next Lightning Lane. You can ride all 14 Lightning Lane attractions at Disneyland just as quickly as you can walk between them, and then hop over to Disney California Adventure to check the other 10 rides off your list.

With Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you can only make selections one at a time. Only after you’ve redeemed your selection (or after 2 hours has passed since you made your selection), can you book your next Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction. Expert Lightning Lane users have managed to hit every Lightning Lane attraction in a single day, with low crowds and no downtime, but the average visitor can expect anywhere from three to eight uses, depending on the day.

Even so, the average visitor isn’t looking at the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and thinking, “for just another $360 I could skip nine more lines!” I believe the real target market for this new offering is the person looking at a VIP Tour (at $350 to $800 per hour) and wondering, “what else do you have?”

Lightning Lane Premier Pass offers one of the most popular perks of VIP tour – the option to bypass the line using the Lightning Lane – at a fraction of the price. True, you don’t have a courteous plaid-vested host leading you around the park all day, but maybe you don’t want one. You miss out on the concierge service that can make dining reservations and reserve VIP viewing for parades and fireworks, but there are dining packages to cover most of those bases.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been fortunate enough to go on a few VIP tours over the years, and they are absolutely magical. But I can also see a situation where, on a different occasion or with a different group of people, I would have been just as happy to have the line-skipping benefits and not the full tour experience or cost. A family of four looking for an upgraded experience without the VIP price tag could save quite a bit opting for Lightning Lane Premier Pass, and I think that’s the market Disney is looking to tap.

Still, that’s a very specific niche, and it’s certainly not for everyone. We note that the pass did not sell out on its initial offering day, so even members of the “well try anything once for clicks” creator crowd are sitting this one out for now. Disney said that pricing will vary by date starting in 2025, and could drop to $300 per person some days. The reality is that Disney will follow the market on this, and if there are people willing to splurge, Disney is happy to accommodate.

Kids’ Special Offer Ticket pricing details

The Kids’ Special Offer Ticket went on sale last week , and we can update the pricing details. This popular ticket is valid for visits between January 7 and March 20, 2025. You can purchase 1-, 2- or 3-day park tickets, and add on optional Park Hopper and/or Lightning Lane Multi Pass service upgrades.

Sleeping Beauty Castle will still be decorated for Christmas when the new Kids Special Ticket offer begins in January. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

These tickets start at $50 per day. In comparison, the current price for 1-day, 1-park child ticket can range from $98 for a “Tier 0,” to $194 for “Tier 6.” A fully-loaded 3-day park hopper ticket with the Lightning Lane Multi Pass add-on runs $336 with this offer, compared to the current price of $365 for just the ticket alone. That said, the cost of the add-ons really cuts into the value of these tickets. If you have the ability to spend more days, skip the add-ons and just enjoy a longer visit.

Ticket Duration and TypeOne Park Per DayPark Hopper add onLightning Lane Multi Pass Add On
One Day$50$45$32
Two Day$100$85$64
Three Day$150$90$96

Read the fine print carefully, because you need to make a theme park reservation to use this ticket, and Disney will set aside only a limited number of reservations for this ticket type each day. As with the prior offer, the terms state, “reservation availability for Kids’ Special Offer Ticket holders is not guaranteed for any date, and reservations may be difficult to get for any particular date, especially as the ticket expiration date approaches.”

In addition to requiring a theme park reservation, this ticket also has a “fuse”—which means multi-day tickets expire 13 days after the first day of use (or on March 20, 2025, whichever comes first). You won’t need to use all two or three days consecutively, but you will need to make sure to use them all before they expire. From past experience, it will be difficult to get reservations the last week of this offer unless you plan well in advance.

We also want to point out that this offer states, “Sales may be paused from time to time or terminated at any time. ” This summer Disney ended sales of a discounted ticket for Anaheim residents more than a week before the end of the promotion, which caught last-minute planners by surprise. Shop early and make reservations as soon as possible for the best experience.

Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree opens

Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree is now open in Bayou Country, just weeks ahead of the official opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. As is usually the case, opening day brought out crowds of Disney fans eager to try the restaurant’s new BBQ menu. Happily this restaurant offers mobile ordering, so plan ahead and avoid the wait when you vist. With the lines as long as they were I didn’t get a chance to try out the new fare, so that review will have to come later. I did see quite a few orders of pickle lemonade slide across the counter, and can’t wait to try it myself. It just can’t be any worse than the pickle milkshake over at Epcot.

Fans who didn’t place a mobile order were faced with a long line at Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree during the opening day lunch rush. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Magic Key sales to resume November 6

The Disneyland Resort is set to resume new sales of Magic Key passes next week. All four levels of Magic Keys will be available for sale no earlier than 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6 through the Disneyland website. Buyers can enter the virtual waiting room no earlier than 8:45 a.m. As a returning feature, prospective buyers can sign up to receive an email notification when its their turn to purchase.

Disneyland has intermittently offered Magic Keys for sale though the past year, with the last sale ending in June. Magic Keys have sometimes sold out in under a day during past releases.

The cost of the passes increased when Disney raised admission prices earlier this month, at the time affecting only those who wanted to renew their pass. The four Magic Key types and corresponding benefits are described below.

Last January, Disney posted a “buying guide” designed to make the online buying process a little easier, so definitely check it out today if you plan to buy a pass next week. While the new notify by email option means you don’t need to sit in front of your computer for hours, you will still need to keep an eye on your email, because you only have 10 minutes to return to the site and make your purchase.

  • Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – Begins November 15.

2025

  • 2025 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – January 30 – February 2. Most events are sold out.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 9, 2024.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 13, 2024.

This offer can only be purchased at a participating US military base ticket office.

2024 Military Hotel discounts

Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 2 through December 13, 2024. You can book now through December 10, 2024, and travel must be completed by December 14, 2024.

Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (833) 618-0536 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.

Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.
