Halloween Half Marathon Weekend
runDisney is back this weekend with the inaugural Halloween Half Marathon weekend. The events begin this Thursday, September 5 and continue through Sunday, September 8
These events always draw tens of thousands of runners, walkers, friends, and family to the Disneyland Resort, and include road closures and operational changes that could impact anyone visiting the Anaheim Resort area this weekend. Here’s what runners, visitors, and spectators should know as we head into this busy weekend.
Non-participants
The Disneyland Resort is going to be very busy this weekend, between the crowds here for the Halloween races and the crowds here for the Halloween decor. The race expo takes place at the Disneyland Hotel convention center Thursday through Saturday, so expect extra crowds and the shops and restaurants, and really all through Downtown Disney.
Friday
If you’re staying at the Grand Californian Hotel in a room overlooking Downtown Disney or in a theme park view room, or at the Pixar Pier Hotel in a room facing Disneyland Drive, expect to hear race-related activities between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Friday, September 6 as participants and spectators make their way through Downtown Disney on their way to and from the Disneyland 5K. The 5K race starts inside Disneyland and ends inside Disney California Adventure, so finish line announcements will likely be audible from theme park view rooms.
Friday’s 5K participants are being directed to park at the Mickey & Friends parking structure starting at 3:00 a.m. Friday morning, but because most participants will be completely done well before the parks open, entering the structure should be relatively easy for park visitors arriving after the races.
Saturday and Sunday
As was the case in January, the 10K and half marathon races have revised courses that now Disneyland Drive and Downtown Disney entirely, so there will be less impact to Pixar Pier or Disneyland hotel guests than in the past. Both courses pass through Disney California Adventure for the first three miles, so again, guests with park view rooms at the Grand Californian hotel may be able to see or hear the runners starting around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
While all of the races take place before park opening or outside the parks, you may still experience traffic delays and extra crowds. If you’re driving to the Disneyland Resort on Saturday or Sunday to visit the theme parks, be sure to pay attention to road closures. We recommend that you park in the Mickey and Friends parking structure, and avoid the Toy Story lot entirely unless arriving after 11:00 a.m.. Runners and spectators are directed to park in the Toy Story parking lot on Saturday and Sunday, and there are road closures from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on some local streets due to the race. Be sure to consult the road closures map for Saturday and Sunday to plan your trip and avoid problems.
Park Hours
Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure open at 8:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, both parks open at 9:00 a.m. Early park entry for hotel guests is offered at Disneyland on Thursday and Friday, and at Disney California Adventure on Saturday and Sunday.
Spectators
Spectator viewing areas vary per race.
For the 5K on Friday, spectator viewing is open from 4:30 to 6:15 a.m. in the Esplanade between theme parks, or at the finish line inside Disney California Adventure park. You enter the 5K finish line Downtown Disney through the gate located between the World of Disney store and Earl of Sandwich.
For the 10K on Saturday, spectator viewing is available in the Esplanade between theme parks, on the course along Harbor Boulevard and Katella Avenue, as well as at the finish line (see the course map for specifics).
The same viewing areas along Harbor and Katella are available on Sunday for the half marathon, as well as in the esplanade between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure as participants make the transition between the parks (see the course map for specifics). Disney also notes that you can cheer on the runners from various locations around the city of Anaheim, including the Anaheim Stadium parking lot, but be sure to check the road closures map so you can get to and from your selected spot.If you’re going to Angels stadium, enter through Orangewood Avenue.
Participants
We’re going to refer you back to the official runDisney handbook for details of your various events for this brand-new race weekend. Please don’t rely on your hazy memory of the last time you ran through Sleeping Beauty Castle—read the guide so you know where to park each day (it changes!), where the start line is for each race (it changes!), and when you need to be where.
Keep in mind that you are required to attend the runDisney Expo at the Disneyland Hotel before your first race in order to pick up your race bib. Expo hours are:
- Thursday, September 5, 2024, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- Friday, September 6, 2024, Noon to 8:00 p.m.
- Saturday, September 7, 2024, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Shoppers – virtual queue info
Finally, no matter whether you’re a legacy runner tackling the challenge, or if your only interest in the event is the merchandise aspect, be aware that Disney is utilizing a virtual queue for all the runDisney Merchandise Shop on the first day of the expo, and reserves the right to implement a virtual queue on Friday and/or Saturday if needed. Club runDisney Gold and Platinum members do not need to join the virtual queue to shop during their exclusive early entry hours, but everyone else will.
If you’re new to the Disneyland virtual queue system, this page will guide you through the process. The virtual queue opens at 7:00 a.m. Pacific time on Thursday, September 5, and you need to be within about 90 miles of the Disneyland Resort in order to join the queue.
One page of the runDisney site says that you can add up to 6 total people to your virtual queue reservation, but another says the limit is 4 people. I would play it safe and assume 4 is the real number, and plan accordingly with your friends and family.
Charity spots open for 2025 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend
At press time almost all events for the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend were sold out directly through runDisney, but Give Kids the World Village in Orlando has space available on their charity team for runners who don’t want to miss the 2025 event.
The 2025 Disneyland Half Marathon weekend is January 31 through February 2, 2025, and includes a number of different events for adults and kids.
Running with a charity team is generally more expensive than just registering with Disney directly, as the charities use these events as a fundraiser for their programs. However, it’s a great opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause, and often the only way to get into a sold-out event. Registration ees start at $150 for the 5K, with an additional $550 fundraising commitment, and go up to $300 for the half marathon, with an additional $800 fundraising commitment. GKTW also has bibs available for the Dumbo Double Dare, but as of press time that event was still open through runDisney.
For more information about running for Give Kids the World, visit their team website.
Holiday Time at Disneyland
We’ve just kicked off Halloween Time, and already Disney is sending out reminders that the winter holiday season is just around the corner. The Holidays at Disneyland begin November 15, the same day Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is set to debut.
The 2024 holiday season will feature all of the returning classic favorites, from the giant Christmas tree and nightly snowfall on Main Street, U.S.A. , to “it’s a small world” Holiday and A Christmas Fantasy Parade.
There are also some new offerings this year worth noting, especially when it comes to dining. Goofy’s Kitchen is following up its popular Halloween character buffet with an all-new Goofy’s Kitchen Celebrates the Holidays! offerings at breakfast, brunch and dinner. At Storyteller’s Cafe, Mickey’s Holiday Pajama Party takes place at breakfast and brunch. These meals begin November 19, and reservations are not yet open.
Santa has a new home at Disneyland this year, and is greeting children at the Fantasyland Theater. Disney says the location will also offer “cookie decorating, craft making, storytelling and atmospheric music throughout the day,” along with appearances from other characters. In addition to these appearances, Santa can also be found at the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail in Disney California Adventure, and at all three Disneyland Resort hotels.
Another new offering is Chip and Dale’s Ornament Trail in Downtown Disney. This is another map hunt event, where for $10 you can search trees around Downtown Disney to find designated ornaments, and then redeem your may for a souvenir. If the ornaments in Disney’s photo are the souvenir, I can see families wanting to collect the entire set of 4 for their trees.
Festival of Holidays returns to Disney California Adventure, and Disney has confirmed that there will be a Sip and Savor pass available again this year, with options for 4 or 8 tastes. Disney promises new and returning favorite musical groups for the celebration, along with the holiday overlays of Cars Land, and the return of World of Color – Season of Light.
Farewell to the Red Car Trolley
I’m a mom and a Cub Scout leader, and one of my absolute favorite activities is take scouts on a hike following the route that the Pacific Red Car line used to run right through the nearby city of Fullerton. There are places where you can still see exposed track from the long-abandoned routes, and walk under the bridges which served the line. As we walk, I talk about the history of the Red Car Line, which most of the scouts and their parents only know about if they’ve watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit, or seen a trolley at Disney California Adventure.
Sadly, these Red Cars are set to follow their ancestors into obscurity, as Disneyland has announced the ride will close in 2025 due to the expansion of the Avengers Campus. The Orange County Register reported the closure last week.
These Red Cars were introduced to Disney California Adventure in 2012 as part of the Buena Vista Street retheme, and helped set the time and place for the park’s main entrance. The cars run from a stop just inside the gates, around the Buena Vista Street fountain and down Hollywood Blvd to the Hyperion Theater, before turning south towards what was originally the Hollywood Tower Hotel and the Tower of Terror attraction. The overnight storage barn for the trolleys was tucked behind a gate to the side of the Tower of Terror.
The theming broke down after that ride was rethemed to Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout in 2017, and even more so after Avengers Campus opened in 2021. For a long while I’ve wondered why Disney didn’t rework the tracks to turn left at the Hyperion Theater, and relocate the storage barn somewhere behind Stage 12 to help maintain the theme. Alternately, it seemed there might be enough room behind the Soarin’ building to house the cars. But with this announcement, and in light of all of the new projects announced at D23 I wonder if there will be much theme left to maintain beyond Carthay Circle.
My older scouts take bike trips to the Port of Los Angeles, where visitors can ride on replicas of the Red Cars along the waterfront. Hopefully Disney finds an equally scenic new home for this piece of LA history, and the trolleys can continue to roll.
Pooh and Friends return
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and the west side of the Pooh Corner shop reopened just ahead of the Labor Day weekend, heralding the unofficial debut of Bayou Country. While Disney is still officially calling the land Critter Country until Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opens on November 15, trash cans in the area and the recorded spiel played on the Mark Twain Riverboat both pay a nod to the new name.
Many feared that Pooh and Friends would be banished from the bayou, but their meet-and-greet is still in place, and Pooh Corner is still filled with Hundred Acre souvenirs and candy Tigger Tails.
The renamed Country Bear Barbecue Jamboree has not yet opened, and Disney hasn’t yet updated the location’s name on the official website. We’re keeping an eye out for news on that new eatery.
Luisa and Isabela visit Frontierland
While Disney California Adventure is celebrating “The Musical World of Coco,” fans of the Madrigal family from Encanto have two new characters to meet in Frontierland. Mirabel’s sisters Luisa and Isabela are now greeting guests at Zocalo Park. Luisa made her debut on Sunday, and Isabele joins the party today, September 3. Both appearances are for a limited time only.
Reshaping Downtown Disney
Last week we shared that Porto’s Bakery had confirmed their commitment to opening a new location in Downtown Disney in 2025, which left open the question about what would happen to the “temporary” Earl of Sandwich location currently occupying the space Porto’s is slated to go on the east side of the district. Disney has since shared concept art for a new dual-concept Earl of Sandwich location on the west side of Downtown Disney. The two-story building will feature an Earl of Sandwich eatery on the lower level, and a new table-service restaurant on the upper level. Disney says The Carnaby Tavern is “being designed as an homage to the swinging ‘60s “British Invasion” pop and rock bands from the U.K.”
The upper-level restaurant will offer “a full patio with an indoor/outdoor full-service bar.” Disney did not say when this new building will open, but did announce that the east side Earl’s locations will close in 2025 to allow for construction of Porto’s.
Disney also announced a number of additional changes to Downtown Disney, and it looks like the district will be a construction zone for quite some time. The first concerns the former Tortilla Jo’s building, which is reportedly slated for partial demolition. Disney had previously announced that an upscale steakhouse and a quick-service BBQ location would open in Downtown Disney, and this week shared that both will be helmed by Michelin-starred Chef Joe Isidori.
Isidori is not new to the Disney food scene. He is also behind Black Tap | Craft Burgers & Beer in Downtown Disney Anaheim, and Everglazed Donuts & Cold Brew in Florida’s Disney Springs.
Names and dates were not revealed for these two eateries, but the demolition of the massive Tortilla Jo’s building will definitely cause some congestion in Downtown Disney, so that’s something to be aware of if you book a Downtown Disney view room at the Grand Californian Hotel.
Three new retail outlets and an expanded candy shop will all open in Downtown Disney this winter. Avengers Reserve and D-Lander Shop are neighbors in a new building on the west side of Downtown Disney. Avengers Academy is your source for all things Marvel, and compliments the nearby Star Wars Trading Post. Based on the description by Disney, the D-Lander Shop will be a much-expanded Disney Dress Shop, offering clothing and accessories.
There are two additional empty retail spaces in this new building, and we’re waiting for Disney to announce those tenants.
Of course, Disney Dress Shop was ousted from it’s original location due to the expansion of Marceline’s Confectionery, which will reopen later this year as Disney Wonderful World of Sweets. The expanded location will offer all of the classic Disneyland treats, and retains the exhibition kitchen that is so popular with fans. Disney surprised us with the announcement that the shop will also feature freshly made Werther’s Original Caramel popcorn, a favorite treat from Epcot’s Karamell-Küche.
The final addition to Downtown Disney is the Kawaii Slime kiosk. This company has been featured at some of Disney’s festivals, most recently the Lunar New Year event in Disney California Adventure, and now they’re opening a location in Downtown Disney.
Disneyana adds silhouette studio
Disneyland’s famed Silhouette Studio has opened a second location on Main Street. The Disneyana shop is now offering the service, with space for two artists to work at a time. The hand-cut paper silhouettes are a popular souvenir at Disneyland, and there are often lines of customers waiting outside the studio for their turn. You’ll find the new set up just inside the front window of the Disney Gallery.

This and That
…Space Mountain will reopen this weekend following refurbishment.
…The Jungle Cruise is scheduled to close on September 16 to begin a refurbishment. According to permits filed, it looks like the long-suffering tiger will finally get his a new temple. The permit calls for workers to “Replace Tiger Structure With New Footing Steel Frame And Cement Plaster Rockwork.”
Correction
Last week I noted that Disney has filed for permits for a renovation of the Plaza Inn, and said that the restaurant appears to be closing on October 2. We reached out to Disney for more information about the project, and did not receive additional details. However, a Disney cast member let us know that the restaurant is not currently scheduled to close, and that the website usually only shows availability for this location 6 weeks in advance. The building permit is valid, but the work probably won’t take place before the holiday season.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2023.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks three weekdays between June 10 and September 26, 2024 for as little as $149 for ages 3-9, or $249 for ages 10 and older using a new discounted ticket which goes on sale May 29, 2024. That represents a savings of up to $219 off the regular price of a three-day, one-park-per-day ticket for children ages 3-9. The adult offer is a $141 discount, and is the same price than the summer 2023 deal.
You can also choose between a ticket good Monday through Thursday OR a slightly more expensive ticket good any day of the week. There are also options to add park hopping and Disney Genie+ service to your ticket at the time of purchase.
This new offer differs from past discouts discounts, so be sure to pay close attention to details before you purchase.
The 3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer is a 3-day, 1-park-per-day ticket that offers admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure:

- The any day ticket – starting at $199 for ages 3-9; $299, for ages 10 and older. Three days (any day of the week, including weekends) between June 10 and September 26, 2024
You can use every day of the 3-Day Disneyland Ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can’t use it to enter both parks on the same day unless you add the park-hopper option ($70 per ticket)
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on June 10 and wait until September 26 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that reservations for this category of ticket are not guaranteed for any particular dates, and that a date may sell out in this ticket category though other ticket types have reservations of available. It is probably best to purchase early and make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Each day of use constitutes one full day of use.
Tickets expire on September 26, 2024, and have no holiday blackouts. That means that you can visit on the 4th of July holiday using a weekday ticket, assuming reservations are available.
May purchase up to 15 tickets per eligible person per day. Tickets are nonrefundable, may not be sold or transferred for commercial use and exclude activities/events separately priced. Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.

In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.
