Writer’s Note, News & Views
Following Disney’s legal settlement earlier this spring with the Governor-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board that the State of Florida replaced the previously Disney-controlled Reedy Creek Improvement District with, last Wednesday, Disney and the Board announced a new agreement for Disney to invest $17 billion in Walt Disney World Resort over the next 10 to 20 years. The first round of that investment sounds a whole lot like what Disney and the Reedy Creek Improvement District had put in place but had tossed out by the new Board when it took control–namely: $8 billion investment in the next 10 years with no specific details provided, but Disney can choose to build a fifth major theme park, two minor theme parks (think water park or even another Disney Springs-type district), add hotel rooms and more.
While major mass media has made a big deal out of the announcement of the agreement, the next round of plans for Walt Disney World Resort’s expansion remain pretty much as vague as before. Sure, there are some new construction permits popping up here and there, and even some new trailers showing up around the property, but the details remain within the Mouse House, with the next round of specifics probably still awaiting the D23 Ultimate Fan Event (formerly known as D23 Expo) in Anaheim in August.
There is a small chance that we will learn a detail or two before next week’s Walt Disney World Resort Update, as we have been invited to the Resort’s “This Is Magic” press event starting June 9th. We know that Disney plans to show off the new Communicore Hall and Plaza at EPCOT which officially open June 10th. And we know that Disney will provide the media preview of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom (which, as Adrienne Vincent-Phoneix correctly noted in yesterday’s Disneyland Resort Update has been more than a bit upstaged by Disney Parks’ decision to release a POV video–more on that in a moment), and an opportunity to see “Disney Dreams That Soar,” the new 800 drone show at Disney Springs that debuted May 24 (and I saw with friends and shared in last week’s Update), and which runs twice nightly through September 2nd. Disney has told us that there will be “surprises,” so there is a possibility that one of the surprises will be some morsel of news about the plans for the Resort’s future.
Having said that, we still await a date sometime “this summer” for the debut of the new Country Bears Musical Jamboree. If I were to guess what one of the news morsels might be, I would guess it could be that. I am pretty sure it will not be any details about the proposed transformation of DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney’s Animal Kingdom into the Tropical Americas-themed land with attractions inspired by Encanto and the tales of Indiana Jones. We have not heard a date for the closing of that park’s “It’s Tough to Be a Bug” for the previously announced installation of a Zootopia-themed show either, and this probably will not be the venue where we will hear that either. And, we probably will not hear details for what’s planned for the expansion “beyond Big Thunder Mountain” right now either, or details about the previously announced Pirates of the Caribbean-themed lounge (in the sense of a tavern) for Adventureland.
I hope I am wrong in thinking we will not learn any big news this week. My visit to EPCOT on Sunday, however, sort of put me in a more negative frame of mind. As I posted on our social media channels, last week’s end of the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival, we have entered the first “EPCOT International Summer Without a Festival” since the global pandemic. The fact that EPCOT is finally taking a break from the constant festival-mode of the past several years is not, in and of itself, a bad thing.
What is a negative in my way of thinking, though, is the number of venues around EPCOT that are closed. I have noted before that since the global pandemic, there are retail locations in front of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom (including at both the park and the TTC), and EPCOT that remain in place but never or seldom operate. Now, with no festival underway, there are shuttered food and beverage as well as merchandise kiosks around EPCOT. Seeing all the closed venues takes away a lot of energy from the park, and, indeed, the park does not even dress them up with any theming to gloss over their being closed that could be considered akin to the artistic (sometimes photo-realistic) scrims that the parks use on scaffolding that covers longer-term facade refurbishment projects.
Below, in the This & That & Reminders section, in the Updated Reminder about the upcoming opening of CommuniCore Hall and Plaza, I note that I had the opportunity to join cast member friends in a preview of the new Mickey & Friends meet and greet area that officially opens June 10th. The indoor space that I got to see in the new building seemed a whole lot like the old space in Innoventions West before it was razed to make way for the “historic” EPCOT transformation, with some additional graphical nods to other parts of EPCOT’s past attractions. After I have an opportunity to see the rest of CommuniCore Hall and Plaza at the Press Event, I intend to share what I learn there as well as what that does to color my overall thoughts about the transformation, as Disney has been saying that the opening of this area (kind of-sort of) completes it.
Before concluding the Writer’s Note, it is again time for my usual remarks about visiting Central Florida in June: forecasts call for lots of 90º and above daytime high temperatures, and the humidity starts to increase at this time of year. Evenings can be pleasant, but overnight lows usually do not dip below 70º (and the low temperature is usually just before dawn). Be prepared and stay hydrated! Speaking of hydration, the weather forecasters are already saying the rainy season is starting up late this year. Right now it is dry, and the waterways around the resort are at or near their usual lowest points. It is still Florida, so thunderstorms and downpours do happen, and often without much in the way of a forecast, but they remain scattered at the moment, keeping things on the dry side. But if it is rain you seek, it is coming, and, indeed, it is officially Tropical Storm Season, and the National Hurricane Center is already predicting that it will be an active one.
Disney Parks Previews Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Online Ahead of Cast and Media and Other Previews
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is due to officially open on June 28 at Magic Kingdom, with the Disneyland version following at some date, as yet unannounced, later this year. Tests have been running at Magic Kingdom for weeks during hours the park was open, and there were times people (likely imagineers) were spotted aboard the logs of the flume ride. On Wednesday, Disney surprisingly showed off quite a bit of the attraction when it released the second episode of its YouTube series, “We Call it Imagineering.” On Thursday, more of the construction walls came down, and Disney revealed the attraction sign. Then, on Saturday, Disney released what it labeled as a “Full Ride POV” video.
While Disney Parks has titled this a “Full Ride POV” video, it does not include the portions of the attraction with little or no scenery. Video courtesy Disney Parks.
Disney has told those of us invited to the Press Event that we will not be allowed to take photos or video record on the ride, but that it will provide a ride cam rig to film media aboard the log. Apparently filming restrictions were not applied to folks attending cast member previews that got underway over the past few days, as numerous new videos inside the attraction are already out on social media.
Just from a time perspective, it was clear that the Disney-posted version of the Ride POV was edited to exclude the portions of the ride with little or no scenery. The comments on the Disney-posted version of the video on YouTube are largely negative, and the social media on this attraction that I have seen has been negative, in general, dating all the way back to the reimagination of Splash Mountain was first announced. Many reports yesterday were that the attraction broke down a number of times which does not seem particularly unusual during any preview period (test and adjust, soft opening, or even when an attraction is new), let alone for the log flume ride previously known as Splash Mountain.
Anyway, watch the video and judge for yourself. I will provide my thoughts after I have an opportunity to preview the attraction. Because of personal commitments elsewhere, I will not have an opportunity to join any cast member friends or the upcoming Passholder previews, so my only preview will be the Press Event.

…REMINDER: As you may recall, 350 new cabins are coming this summer to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort as a new part of Disney Vacation Club, and like all DVC properties, they will be available to Members using points, or anyone through central reservations for cash. The new cabins have the same footprint as those at Fort Wilderness that they are replacing, with 527 square feet of living space plus an outdoor deck. The cabins are categorized as one bedroom units that sleep up to six guests with a queen sized bed and a bunk bed in the bedroom, and a pull-down queen sized bed in the living area. Each unit also has a full kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, and a separate vanity. Unlike many DVC one bedroom villas, these cabins do not have soaking or whirlpool tubs and they do not have laundry facilities in the cabin (there are laundry facilities around the Fort Wilderness Resort). Disney invited MousePlanet and other media sites to the Central Florida warehouse where the cabins are being pre-fabricated and gave us a tour of one of them this spring, and we have been invited to the grand opening on July 1st. The captions of the photos below will take you through the details we saw and you can read more in our First Look post.
…REMINDER: The remaining Disney Vacation Club Moonlight Magic event nights are coming up this summer. These complimentary, after-hours events feature select attractions with shorter-than-usual wait times, plus character greetings, entertainment and more. The remaining events are:
- Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park – tonight, June 4th (registration closed), and July 11 (general registration June 27).
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios – August 27th: Early Registration August 1st for those with finalized hotel reservations as of July 28 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern; general registration August 15.
A link to the event registration queue is posted online shortly before the registration windows open. If you are an eligible member and have a hotel reservation that includes August 27 (with the party size finalized by July 28 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern),, keep an eye on your email for a registration reminder for the Disney’s Hollywood Studios event with a link. The registration link will also be available on the event website itself, with an additional registration link available when general registration opens for members that are eligible for the “Extras” (having bought the required number of points directly from DVC). Note: Eligible Disney Vacation Club members are limited to attending one Moonlight Magic event per theme park, per calendar year. The Hotel Reservation Finalization (Party Size) deadline is the date by which an eligible DVC member’s qualifying hotel reservation has to have the number of guests listed on the hotel reservation that will be the maximum number of Moonlight Magic guests that can attend an event (if successfully registered); the hotel reservation may be modified after this date subject to the usual reservation rules, but those modifications will not increase the number of attendees that can attend a registered event. Canceling a qualifying hotel reservation after registering for a Moonlight Magic event during the Early Registration window will cancel that registration. The DVC member must attend the Moonlight Magic event to check in with all of their guests present at the same time.
…REMINDER: On June 9, as a salute to U.S. Armed Forces and Veterans, The American Adventure at EPCOT will get a new exhibit, Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors, from the George W. Each painting will be accompanied by the inspiring story of the veteran depicted personally written by President Bush. While May marks the start of National Military Appreciation Month, this exhibit is part of Disney’s admiration for those who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and veterans, with additional events to be shared and then followed by the 2024 return of the Department of Defense Warrior Games at Walt Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, June 21-30.

…The second episode of Disney’s YouTube series “We Call it Imagineering” is now available for streaming. Its focus is on “soundscapes” like the music produced for attractions (and is dedicated to Richard Sherman in light of his passing last week), and provides some new information about both Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the new Country Bears Musical Jamboree show coming to Magic Kingdom later this summer. In fact, the video provided a surprise first extensive look inside Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, with Disney Parks releasing its “POV” of the attraction (noted in the Writer’s Note above) a couple of days later.
“We Call it Imagineering” Episode 2 is now available on the Disney Parks YouTube Channel.

Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today! As always, we remind our readers that Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. Historically, non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks.
