Writer’s Note, News & Views
The new “Disney Dreams That Soar presented by AT&T” drone show debuted on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Disney Springs. It is the Resort’s first drone show for the public since Starbright Holidays debuted in 2016 (and closed just after New Year 2017), and Disney Live Entertainment’s biggest one yet anywhere around the globe, using 800 show drones, each of which are around a foot tall and wide. For comparison, Starbright Holiday used 300 Intel Shooting Star drones for its show which were similar in size.
Subject to weather conditions, the new nearly 10 minute show is scheduled for two nightly performances through September 2, 2024. As of publication, the showtimes are 9 p.m. and 10:45 p.m., and, as the drones maneuver over the lake between Disney Springs and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort, Disney says that the best views “will be along the waterway in the Disney Springs West Side.” The show has an original soundtrack that includes iconic movie quotes from movies like Peter Pan, Dumbo, Wall-E, Big Hero 6, and Star Wars. The show celebrates more than 30 Disney (and related company) characters “taking dreams to the skies and the joy of flight.”
Disney released the following details of note about the show:
- Big Ben in the show stands at 328 feet tall, surpassing the real-life Big Ben’s height of 316 feet.
- The Death Star in the show reaches a height of 213 feet, towering over Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, which stands at 180 feet.
- The Up House is a height of 321 feet, which is roughly equivalent to three and a half Up Houses stacked on each other (including the balloons!).
- Baymax in the show has a height of 328 feet, which is roughly 52 times bigger than the character Baymax at Disney Parks.
- The highest point of the show is the Dumbo scene reaching 354 feet, which is 17 times higher than the Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride at Magic Kingdom.
- The width of the show spans an impressive 524 feet, roughly equivalent to the length of two and a half Monorail trains.

As I predicted in the last Update, since Disney Springs does not charge admission, parking is free, and the prime viewing area is not very large, Disney Springs was quite crowded for the first several performances of this new show. Indeed, for the very first public show, my friends and I were unable to get in to the main viewing area along the West Side waterfront at forty-five minutes before showtime, but we were able to secure fairly good positions on the adjacent lawn between Cirque du Soleil’s theater and the waterfront (near House of Blues). I say “fairly good” positions because the view from the lawn is a bit off to the side which makes some of the 3D images a bit harder to see clearly, but, on the upside, the lawn did have temporary speakers installed to play the show’s soundtrack.
As I figured would be the case, the Congress Park neighborhood of Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort provided even better viewing than we experienced from the lawn, and, the bonus was that it was not very crowded. When Disney announced the debut of the show, I booked a two-night Disney Vacation Club member stay at Disney’s Saratoga Springs in a one bedroom villa and requested Congress Park. My friends and I found ideal viewing there for the 10:45 p.m. showing on opening night, and for both the 9 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. showings on Saturday night. The only downside of viewing the backside of the show from Disney’s Saratoga Springs is that the Resort (and/or DVC) opted not to install speakers on the Resort’s side of the lake, making the soundtrack rather faint as the sound traveled across the lake and through the hum of the drones. (Okay, another downside is that everything is backwards, including the logo at the finale, but, honestly, that was a pretty minor downside and can be fixed in photos by flipping the image as I did in the final photo in the slideshow above.)

As I cautioned last week, for those that want to see the show, or even if you just have dinner reservations at a Disney Springs restaurant, or plan to attend a showing of “Drawn to Life” by Disney and Cirque du Soleil, or a movie at the AMC Disney Springs 24 Dine-In Theaters, or a concert at House of Blues, you need to be mindful of the potential for crowds at Disney Springs:
If you are staying at a Disney Resort, you probably should first consider Disney Transportation (busses or Minnie Vans) to get to and from Disney Springs. If you are driving, you will probably want to get to Disney Springs well-before nightfall, as the parking garages can and do fill up during busy times. Back when Disney Springs presented the Starbright Holidays drone show in 2016, the parking areas often filled up long before showtime, and, indeed, at the same time, Disney Springs was also filled with holiday shoppers and its original version of the Christmas Tree Trail. Remember also that since those 2016 shows, Disney added security screening areas to Disney Springs, and those choke points can get crowded too.
Social media reports following the debut show included claims that it took over an hour to exit for some to exit the parking garages after the very first performance. Additional video posted to social media showed guests on foot in a standstill on the West Side after the show as many were heading to the Orange Garage’s two entrances. From our vantage point on the lawn near Cirque du Soleil’s theater after the first show, we found exiting back to the West Side footpath to Disney’s Saratoga Springs rather easy-going through the Strawberry lot. If you are considering venturing between Disney Springs and Saratoga Springs, be aware that in this extremely dry season, the waterways are too low for Disney to operate the boats between the Resorts and Disney Springs. Walking from Congress Park requires either entering Disney Springs at the security checkpoint at the Marketplace or walking through The Springs, crossing the bridge along the golf course, and then walking through the Strawberry lot before heading around the Cirque du Soleil theater to enter the West Side security checkpoint located between Cirque du Soleil and City Works (follow the signs).
Finally, just my usual remarks about visiting Central Florida as we head in to June: forecasts call for lots of 90º and above daytime high temperatures, and the humidity starts to increase at this time of year. Evenings can be pleasant, but overnight lows that do not dip below 70º (and that is usually just before dawn). Be prepared and stay hydrated! Speaking of hydration, as noted above, the waterways around the resort are at or near their usual lowest points of the year because it is not yet the rainy season. It’s Florida, so thunderstorms and downpours do happen, and often without much in the way of a forecast. The National Hurricane Center is already tracking a number of tropical waves, with the official start of tropical storm season coming up June 1.

For those not familiar, this pair of hotels is on Disney Property but are not Disney owned-and-operated, but guests at these resort within the Marriott portfolio do get many of the same benefits as though they were staying at a Disney Resort.
MousePlanet was invited to a preview of last year’s event and shared an overview of what to expect at the event on our Instagram page.
MousePlanet was also invited to the first night of last year’s event, and we posted highlights to an Instagram Story. The 2023 Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic raised more than $10,000 for the Orlando military charity, Friends of Fisher House Orlando. The 2024 charity beneficiary will be announced at a later date.
More information about the 2024 event, including educational seminars, will be released soon. For the latest information or to purchase tickets, guests can visit SwanDolphinFoodAndWineClassic.com, like swandolphinfwc on Facebook, or call 1-888-828-8850. This & That & Reminders…
…With a month to go until the official opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom, Disney Parks Blog celebrated the collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering and a local Central Florida small business in the creation of the water tower at the attraction on both coasts. Icarus Exhibits worked with WDI to create the Tiana’s Foods water tower, and it has worked with Disney in creating pieces of Disney Parks around the globe and Disney Cruise Line since the 1990s.
…Happy 30th Anniversary to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge! Though it has had a number of Disney Vacation Club additions over the years, and underwent the conversion of a large portion of the hotel into even more Disney Vacation Club villas, the resort remains “as a tribute to the storied lodges of America’s great national parks,” as Disney Parks Blog posted yesterday.
…Back at the end of April, I spotted six of the Smellephants on Parade installation at Magic Kingdom in the Storybook Circus area of Fantasyland. The new free scavenger hunt is now available for all guests.

…REMINDER: Country Bear Jamboree is closed in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom while its new Country Bear Musical Jamboree show is being installed. Last week, Disney showed off a look at some of the refurbished bears. Out front, the sign has been covered, probably in anticipation of the installation of a new one.
…REMINDER: Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is scheduled to reopen on July 27, 2024. It has been closed for refurbishment since early January. Notwithstanding early internet rumors, Disney has described this extended refurbishment as “routine.”
…REMINDER: Walt Disney World Resort salutes Passholders with “v.i.passholder days” through June 26, 2024. That catch-all term includes a number of limited time perks, including some perks that are only available for an even more limited time. For example, the DisneyStore.com discount ended May 24. Disney announced dining discounts increased at certain locations starting yesterday, May 28, and will continue through June 26, 2024.
- Increased Dining Discounts at Select Walt Disney World Resort locations: May 28 through June 26, 2024
Passholders dining at select locations at Walt Disney World Resort through June 26, 2024, can save 20% on food and nonalcoholic beverages. It is always a good idea to ask a host or server about discounts upon arrival at a restaurant. The published locations participating in this increased discount are:- Magic Kingdom

A complimentary Stitch-themed Passholder magnet is available at Creations Shop at EPCOT through June 26, 2024. The Stitch Cake Cone features vanilla chiffon cake with coconut buttercream and mango crisp pearls. This Passholder exclusive treat is available at Sunshine Seasons in The Land pavilion at EPCOT during its regular hours through June 26. Be aware that Sunshine Seasons often has limited hours of operation, and those hours are not published in the My Disney Experience app, so if you want this treat during v.i.passholder days, be sure to have proof of your pass, a valid photo I.D., and stop by this location earlier in the day, as we have often found limited or no operation at this location after 4 p.m.

Passholder-exclusive PhotoPass magic shots will be available during regular park hours at EPCOT near Dreamers Point in the World Celebration Gardens area. REMINDER: the giant Mickey Mouse ice cream bar prop is only scheduled to be available through May 30; from June 1 to June 26, an oversized Mickey Mouse donut photo prop will be available. There is also a Stitch Magic Shot available. - Passholder Lounge at Restaurant Marrakesh, EPCOT: Through June 18, 2024
A Passholder Lounge is scheduled to operate in from noon until 8 p.m. daily in the former Restaurant Marrakesh space at EPCOT’s Morocco pavilion. It is designated a “Passholder Exclusive,” requiring a valid pass and matching photo I.D. (standard park admission rules apply too), and the description of the perk does not include any non-Passholder guest admissions. Complimentary snacks and water, mobile device charging stations, and a complimentary Passholder button will be available in the lounge. Social media posts have shown character appearances by Genie, for example, have happened within from time to time. Be aware that you may encounter a significant wait to get in the venue.

…REMINDER: EPCOT’s CommuniCore Hall and Plaza, including its new Mickey & Friends meet and greet area are scheduled to open on June 10, 2024. The opening will also mark the debut of a new limited-time show, “¡Celebración Encanto!” which is scheduled to run several times daily from June 10 until September 6. This sing-along on the CommuniCore Plaza stage features songs and the story of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto. Disney says Mirabel and Bruno “may” appear.
…REMINDER: Also starting June 10, Joy from Inside Out and Inside Out 2 will begin making appearances at Pixar Place in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Meanwhile, June 10 also marks the beginning of Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s celebration of the 30th anniversary of the release of Disney’s animated classic The Lion King with special menu items and merchandise, Timon and Rafiki meeting and greeting at Rafiki’s Planet Watch, and the opportunity to learn to draw characters from the film at Animation Experience. That celebration is scheduled to run through September 6.
…REMINDER: Disney Vacation Club sent members of an upcoming temporary closure of the Disney Vacation Club Member Lounge at EPCOT from June 2, 2024 to July 13, 2024. The temporary closure is due to a planned refurbishment. The Lounge is scheduled to reopen on July 14, 2024. During the temporary closure, there will be a temporary Members lounge inside The Odyssey, located between Test Track and Mexico Pavilion. There will be a sectioned space available for eligible Members with “comfortable seating, complimentary beverages and snacks as well as access to additional paid food and beverage offerings within The Odyssey.” The temporary lounge will be open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (subject to change), and the standard Member Lounge eligibility and rules apply to the use of this location.
…REMINDER: Disney Vacation Club’s recent brief update on the construction of Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows noted that it is projected to open in December 2024 with a variety of room types that will sleep from two to nine guests, such as duo studios, one- and two-bedroom villas, and a brand-new category of two-bedroom penthouse villas. …REMINDER: As you may recall, 350 new cabins are coming this summer to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort as a new part of Disney Vacation Club, and like all DVC properties, they will be available to Members using points, or anyone through central reservations for cash. The new cabins have the same footprint as those at Fort Wilderness that they are replacing, with 527 square feet of living space plus an outdoor deck. The cabins are categorized as one bedroom units that sleep up to six guests with a queen sized bed and a bunk bed in the bedroom, and a pull-down queen sized bed in the living area. Each unit also has a full kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, and a separate vanity. Unlike many DVC one bedroom villas, these cabins do not have soaking or whirlpool tubs and they do not have laundry facilities in the cabin (there are laundry facilities around the Fort Wilderness Resort). Disney invited MousePlanet and other media sites to the Central Florida warehouse where the cabins are being pre-fabricated and gave us a tour of one of them this spring, and we have been invited to the grand opening on July 1st. The captions of the photos below will take you through the details we saw and you can read more in our First Look post.
…REMINDER: The remaining Disney Vacation Club Moonlight Magic event nights are coming up this summer. These complimentary, after-hours events feature select attractions with shorter-than-usual wait times, plus character greetings, entertainment and more. The remaining events are:

Each painting will be accompanied by the inspiring story of the veteran depicted personally written by President Bush. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today! As always, we remind our readers that Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. Historically, non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks.
