Writer’s Note, News & Views
Let’s see, last week, I wrote:
Interestingly, in recent past years, Disney has celebrated halfway-to-Halloween about now, but we have not heard anything about Magic Kingdom’s plans for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party this year as of yet. Of course, merely by typing that sentence, haven’t I all-but-guaranteed that Disney will make announcements about Halloween after I hit the publish button on Tuesday? If that’s the case, we’ll be sure to share on social media (at minimum).
Okay, so Disney waited to celebrate Halfway-to-Halloween yesterday. We promptly published an article with all the details for Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, Disney Cruise Line, and parks around the world. Here’s what you need to know for Walt Disney World, as tickets for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party go on sale tomorrow, Wednesday, May 8, for those staying at select Walt Disney World Resort hotels, as well as Shades of Green and the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin hotels. General sales open on Wednesday, May 15 for all guests.
Halloween parties begin August 9 this year, and run select nights through October 31. Tickets are $119 to $199, depending on event night. On event nights, the party starts at 7 p.m. and runs until Midnight; party ticket holders may enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4 p.m. on their event night without a separate park ticket or reservation. The usual Halloween costume policy applies, so be sure to read the details if you plan to attend to in costume.
Discounts of $10/ticket apply on some dates for Passholders and Disney Vacation Club Members, so, it is particularly important when purchasing online, to log in to your My Disney Experience account that is linked to your credentials. To purchase tickets, visit Disneyworld.com/Halloween or call the Disney Reservation Center at 407-934-7639. Cast Member discounts are available on some nights on the cast web portal.
The party nights are:
- August – 9, 13, 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30
- September – 2, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 27 and 29
- October – 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24, 25, 27, 29 and 31
New this year is a DescenDANCE Party tied to the new Disney+ movie; a first-ever meet-and-greet with Mirabel and Bruno in Fantasy Garden, and, of course, Mickey and friends who will appear in brand-new Halloween themed costumes. Disney says more villains will be out and about during the party than in the past. Trick-or-treating will be available during party hours as usual, and Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade will take place at an earlier time (8:15 p.m.), Disney says, to allow viewing by “little ones who want to enjoy the spooky fun before it’s bedtime.” (The parade will also run at 11:15 p.m.) Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular returns with three scheduled shows for parties through September 28, and four scheduled shows for the rest of the parties. Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular (fireworks) will be shown at 10 p.m. on party nights, and reservations for the add-on Dessert Party, which includes fireworks viewing from Plaza Garden or Tomorrowland Terrace., opens June 7 (having a good view of Cinderella Castle for this fireworks show provides the best opportunity to see the giant Jack Skellington puppet-like figure and all of the show’s projections and effects.)
American Sign Language interpretation will be offered at select shows on the following dates:
- Friday, August 23, 2024
- Thursday, September 26, 2024
- Thursday, October 24, 2024
More details are available on Disneyworld.com/Halloween and we’ll highlight the additional specialty offerings as the event’s 2024 debut draws closer. Disney Parks Blog has shared highlights of the merchandise coming to Disney Parks and DisneyStore.com for the Halloween season this year.
Finally, before we turn to the rest of the news and views, it is time for my usual summer comments about the weather. Yes, you read that correctly, summer.
May temperatures here in Central Florida start getting to and above 90º during the day. The humidity starts to climb too. The forecast for the rest of this week is very hot, with possible records coming on Thursday. So, while May also tends to have a good number of fairly nice days, be prepared and stay hydrated! If you are not used to the heat, be sure to take some cooling breaks, and, indeed, even if you are used to the heat, caution is advised, and, in any event, remember that Florida weather is never entirely predictable.
Florida weather reporters have started talking hurricane preparedness, and the National Hurricane Center marks the official start of tropical storm season as June 1. In the meantime, while Central Florida may not see widespread daily thunderstorms, they do start to pop up this time of year too. Remember, an umbrella and a poncho may help you not get too drenched, but they are no protection against lightning; when it is thundering and you see Disney closing outdoor venues because lightning is in the area, it is time for you to seek shelter too.
Cirque du Soleil Previews New “Page to Stage Signature Experience”
As mentioned in our Update last week, “Drawn to Life” presented at Disney Springs by Cirque du Soleil and Disney, is offering a new “Page to Stage Signature Experience” starting May 24. “Page to Stage” is a specially curated experience from pre- to post-show. Guests begin their evening with a personalized greeting and check-in with a host, select concessions of their choice (non-alcoholic beverage and snack) to enjoy during the show, including a souvenir popcorn bucket, and watch the show from premium, reserved seating. Following the show, “Page to Stage” guests have the opportunity to meet and greet some of the cast and take photos. The “Page to Stage” experience then provides guests with an under-the-stage and backstage tour of the theater which includes up-close looks at some of the costumes and props. Guests will receive a Drawn to Life gift bag, in addition to receiving a discount off purchases made at the theater’s Cirque du Soleil store.
“Page to Stage” is designed to be a VIP experience similar to those offered by Cirque at its Las Vegas and other productions. I was invited to a media preview of the tour portion of the new experience last week. The tour is designed to be family friendly and accessible, though, as you can imagine, an under-the-stage and backstage experience includes some tighter spaces, and guests who are unable to walk stairs will be taken between levels of the theater building by elevator. For those that enjoy seeing some of the operations of a professional theater, the tour provides some of the highlights that are out of sight during a performance. Fans of the history of Disney animation will appreciate that this tour provides very close-up looks at set pieces and props that are copies of items found, created and/or used at Walt Disney Animation Studios, and they were created with the assistance of the Walt Disney Company Archives team. The level of detail of these items is quite impressive, especially since during a performance of Drawn to Life, they cannot be seen clearly from most seats in the theater.

Drawn to Life is presented Wednesdays through Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Drawn to Life Tickets are available through December 2024. Starting May 24, the “Page to Stage” experience is offered for the second performance on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and is limited to nine guests for each of those shows. (Cirque said it will consider adding to the experience schedule in the future.) Tickets for the experience are $285 for adults and $225 for children; the price includes the premium seating for the show and other perks mentioned above (taxes and fees are included too).
As you may recall, Drawn to Life, took up residence at Disney Springs in November 2021, and it is the first-ever creative collaboration between Cirque and Disney. Its debut, delayed by the global pandemic, followed the two-decade run of La Nouba on the West Side of what is now known as Disney Springs. Drawn to Life tells the story of the love between a father and a daughter, drawing inspiration from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 100-year heritage of storytelling. It celebrates iconic Disney stories and characters through innovative design, acrobatic performances, choreography, musical scores and brand-new animation created by Disney Animation artists.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios Celebrated 35th Anniversary
On May 1, Disney’s Hollywood Studios celebrated the 35th anniversary of the park’s opening as the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park. As the park leadership has often described over the past years, in addition to the park’s name change, its focus has also changed over the years from taking guests behind the scenes of film and television production to immersing guests in their own adventures set within the worlds of Star Wars, Toy Story, and more. Disney invited media, including me, to attend the anniversary celebration.
Photos by Alan S. Dalinka.
Jackie Swisher, Vice President of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, told us the summer plans for the park include a “sneak peak” at Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out 2 starting June 10, and the character Joy (from the film and the original film) will begin meeting and greeting guests that day in Pixar Plaza. She also reminded us that “The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure” will debut at the park in the fall. The new show is told from Ariel’s point of view and, she noted, will include the songs from the Disney animated classic, including “Kiss the Girl.”
This & That & Reminders…
…On June 9, as a salute to U.S. Armed Forces and Veterans, The American Adventure at EPCOT will get a new exhibit, Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors, from the George W. Bush Institute. The exhibit features 60 oil paintings by President Bush of service members and veterans who have served in military uniform with honor since 9/11, and whom the President has come to know personally since leaving office. Each painting will be accompanied by the inspiring story of the veteran depicted personally written by President Bush. While May marks the start of National Military Appreciation Month, this exhibit is part of Disney’s admiration for those who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and veterans, with additional events to be shared and then followed by the 2024 return of the Department of Defense Warrior Games at Walt Disney World June 21-30.
…As you may recall, 350 new cabins are coming this summer to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort as a new part of Disney Vacation Club, and like all DVC properties, they will be available to Members using points, or anyone through central reservations for cash. The new cabins have the same footprint as those at Fort Wilderness that they are replacing, with 527 square feet of living space plus an outdoor deck. The cabins are categorized as one bedroom units that sleep up to six guests with a queen sized bed and a bunk bed in the bedroom, and a pull-down queen sized bed in the living area. Each unit also has a full kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, and a separate vanity. Unlike many DVC one bedroom villas, these cabins do not have soaking or whirlpool tubs and they do not have laundry facilities in the cabin (there are laundry facilities around the Fort Wilderness Resort). Disney invited MousePlanet and other media sites to the Central Florida warehouse where the cabins are being pre-fabricated and gave us a tour of one of them last week. The captions of the photos below will take you through the details we saw and you can read more in our First Look post last week.

The ticket is valid through September 28, 2024, and park reservations are required. It really is important to stress the necessity for making your park reservations as soon as you complete your purchase. Disney is only setting aside a limited number of reservations for this ticket type each day, and states, “Reservations may be unavailable for any particular date or park, especially as you get closer to the date of visit or ticket expiration date.”
If you are not a Florida Resident, or you are, but park reservations are not available for the dates you want to visit, Disney is also offering the 4-Day, 4-Park Magic Ticket from $99 Per Day, Plus Tax (Total Price from $396, Plus Tax). This ticket cannot be used to enter the same theme park more than once.
If you are willing to skip Magic Kingdom, Disney is also offering a Special 3-Day, 3-Park Ticket to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, EPCOT and Disney’s Animal Kingdom only, starting from $89 per day, plus tax (total price starting from $267, plus tax). Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today! As always, we remind our readers that Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. Historically, non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks.
