Last week of summer?
Summer officially began just over a month ago, but it seems as far as the Disneyland Resort is concerned the season ends this week. The summertime Pixar Fest promotion ends next Sunday, August 4th, so this is your last chance to enjoy all of the Pixar-themed entertainment offerings and food selections at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
The “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!” parade at Disney California Adventure will have its final performance of the season at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 4.
The “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” remains on the schedule at Disneyland nightly at 9:30 p.m. through August 22. It is replaced with the “Halloween Screams” fireworks starting Friday, August 23.
The Pixar Pals Playtime Party also ends its run at Disneyland on Sunday, August 4, and the Pixar Fest Marketplaces stop serving at Disney California Adventure at 9:00 p.m.
Next Monday marks the beginning of the early fall refurbishment season, with attractions closing in both parks:
Disneyland:
- Disneyland Railroad – closes August 5 for refurbishment. Reopening date not published.
- Space Mountain – closed August 5 through September 5 for refurbishment.
- Disneyland Monorail – closes August 12 for refurbishment. Reopening date not published.
Disney California Adventure:
- Animation Academy inside the Animation Building – closes August 5 for refurbishment. Reopening date not published.
- Turtle Talk with Crush inside the Animation Building – closed August 5-15 for refurbishment.
- Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome inside the Animation Building – closed August 5-15 for refurbishment.
Deadpool and Wolverine visit DCA
While I was off camping again this weekend, Disney did the almost unthinkable and introduced Deadpool and Wolverine as in-park characters in Disney California Adventure. The announcement on Instagram had me checking the date to make sure this wasn’t April 1st, and came with a series of photos that I honestly never thought I’d see from Disney.
The “merc with a mouth” and the mutant appear at various locations throughout Avengers campus, and at the new Story Time with Deadpool in Hollywood Land. From Disney’s description:
“From his favorite cozy reading chair, join Deadpool as he reads froim his big book of super special stories. These family-friendly tales will delight, charm and inspire in the way only Deadpool can.”
Sensing that parents might be apprehensive about allowing their children to hear from an R-rated character, Disney assures visitors, “Really, these stories are suitable for all ages!” Wolverine also makes a guest appearance at this show.
Wolverine and Deadpool may also appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off! and Avengers Assemble shows in Disney California Adventure. There’s also a new Chimichanga offering at Pym Test Kitchen
\with seasoned beef, charred poblano, refried beans and shredded cheese, on a pool of guajillo sauce with a pico de gallo side salad. Available starting July 26 at Pym Test Kitchen.
Since I was off in the wilds of San Bernardino County this weekend, I’m sharing here photos and videos taken by our friends at DAPS Magic.

Haunted Mansion Holiday reopens
Disneyland last week delighted fans with word that the Haunted Mansion Holiday would reopen at Disneyland beginning Monday July 29, 2024. The announcement read, “Just in time for the Halloween Time and Holiday seasons at the Disneyland Resort, the attraction will don décor inspired by “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.” At the center of the “frightful fête’s ballroom” scene is the gingerbread house, with an all-new design for this year.”
We’ve previously shared that the outdoor queue of the Haunted Mansion is currently closed for an extensive renovation to add more space, new theming and a new gift shop near the exit. Due to the ongoing construction, and to help reduce foot traffic in an area which is doubly impacted by construction around the Haunted Mansion and the complete closure of Critter Country, Disneyland will use a virtual queue to manage access to Haunted Mansion Holiday. At least one member of your party will need to have the Disneyland mobile app installed to use the virtual queue, and we’ll go over the step-by-step below.
As was the case with Rise of the Resistance in the pre-Lightning Lane era, Disneyland will open the virtual queue for Haunted Mansion Holiday twice each day. The first opportunity will be at 7:00 a.m., and is only for visitors who made a park reservation to start their day at Disneyland. You do not need to be inside a theme park to join the earlier virtual queue.
A second window opens at Noon, to give visitors who may be park hopping after starting their day at Disney California Adventure a chance to get on the ride. Note that your entire party must already have entered a theme park before Noon to join the second virtual queue, though you don’t need to still be physically in the park to join.
Either way, you want to link the tickets for your entire travel party well before you try to enter the virtual queue. This is an important step if you want your entire party in the same boarding group once the virtual queue opens, and will allow each person to try request a boarding group for the entire party. (We should note that Disney warns visitors not to do this, saying “If multiple people in your party try to join the virtual queue simultaneously, that may inhibit your ability to join a group.”)
As soon as the virtual queue opens, your designated person will select “Virtual Queues” on the home screen of the Disneyland app, then select “Haunted Mansion Holiday.” The user will select their party from a list of people to whom they are already linked in the Disneyland smartphone app, then choose to add their party to the boarding group. The app gives you your assigned boarding group, and lets you monitor the status of boarding groups.
As always, you can only enter the virtual queue once per day. You can be in no more than two virtual queues at the same time – either one ride and one show (like World of Color), or two shows. At the moment, virtual queue is only in use for World of Color and Haunted Mansion Holiday, so there shouldn’t be any conflicts two months after the Anaheim City Council approved zoning changes which clear the way for Disney to begin a $1.9 Billion expansion of the Disneyland Resort.
Disney and unions reach contract agreement
The Disneyland Resort and a coalition of unions representing nearly 14,000 cast members last week announced a tentative agreement for a new three-year contract. The union presented the agreement to their members yesterday, July 29 for approval; results of the vote had not been released as of press time.
In a statement to members, the union said, “We believe this three-year agreement meets our needs and delivers us the wages, seniority increases, premiums, and protections we deserve, but nothing is final until we all have a chance to review the offer and vote on it.” The union also says they were able to affect changes to the attendance policy.
In a published statement, Disney said, “We care deeply about the wellbeing of our cast members and are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement with Master Services Council that addresses what matters most to our cast while positioning Disneyland Resort for future growth and job creation.”
This brings to an end three months of negotiations, and averts a threatened strike by the unions. The negotiations have been contentious, with the union claiming unfair labor practices on the part of Disney. The union staged several demonstrations during the talks, including a march on Disneyland’s birthday, July 17. The two sides have not released any details of the proposed contract to the public, but we do note that the union apparently prevailed on the contract length. Disney had initially offered a five-year deal, while the union asked to be able to renegotiate after three years.
D23 Day details
Hoping to get attendees of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event to hop across the street for a day, the Disneyland Resort will host the first-ever D23 Day at the Disneyland Resort on Thursday, August 8.
To start, and while supplies last, all visitors to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will receive a pair of D23 Mickey Mouse ear hats. You don’t need to be a D23 member to receive the ears, but supplies are limited. Even if you miss out on the ears, all visitors will receive complimentary unlimited digital downloads of Disney PhotoPass photos taken on August 8.
At Noon, a cavalcade of 23 characters and select Disney Legends will make its way down Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park. There are also limited-time character appearances in the works, including Goofy and Max from “Goof Troop.”
Of course there is merchandise. A new Tarzan 25th Anniversary collection will drop on August 8, and be available at Disneyana at Disneyland, Off the Page at Disney California Adventure and WonderGround Gallery in the Downtown Disney District for a limited time.
Disney California Adventure will host the Disney Jr. Let’s Play! Party on August 8, with some special offerings. Ariel from Disney Jr. will make her first appearance in a one-day parade at DCA. There will be an arts and crafts area and live performances in Hollywood Land. The popular “Confection Purrfection with the SuperKitties” cupcake decorating activity will also be offered.
Reservations open soon for more Halloween Time dining
Reservations open soon for more dining packages during Halloween Time, and you need to be on your toes to book as soon as reservations open. While these events are supposed to go on sale 60 days in advance, we’re still checking daily for the reservations to open to the public.
Storytellers Cafe at the Grand Californian Hotel
Disney announced earlier this year that Storytellers Cafe would receive a “autumn-inspired breakfast and brunch,” featuring new seasonal decor and Disney characters in new seasonal costumes. The restaurant’s reservations page has not been updated to reflect this new offering, and there are no reservations available at the location starting September 3. We guess that’s the date the new offering will begin, and so those visiting Disneyland after that date should keep an eye out for reservations to open.
Goofy’s Kitchen at at the Disneyland Hotel
This restaurant received an adorable Halloween overlay last year, and it’s back to charm again this year. We are guessing this character meal will begin on Friday, August 23, because at press time there were no reservations for this location open beyond that date.
Tomorrowland Skyline Terrace in Disneyland
The Tomorrowland Skyline Terrace experience offers each guest a prix-fix meal with a choice of entree, sides, and dessert from a set menu at Galactic Grill, along with unlimited soft drinks, coffee, hot cocoa, and bottled water. Menu details have not been updated for 2024, and it appears the package will only be offered on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays starting September 1. (With the addition of Labor Day)
Customers pick up their meal from the Galactic Grill in Tomorrowland before heading upstairs to the Skyline Lounge. Your package includes a reserved table in the Skyline Lounge all night, and you can come and go as you please. Note: You may be seated with other parties. Each table in outfitted with charging stations for your electronic devices, and there are a variety of games around the area if you’re so inclined.
Plaza Inn at Disneyland
A Disneyland official confirmed that Disneyland’s Plaza Inn will not offer a Halloween Screams dinner package this year.

This and That
…The popular and sold out Create Your Own Headbands will return to Disneyland Resort starting August 8. The accessories will be available at The Mad Hatter on Main Street, U.S.A., in Disneyland Park and Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff in Pixar Pier at Disney California Adventure Park.
…The new Disney Vacation Club Welcome Home Center is now open at Disney California Adventure. Golden Vine House is NOT a DVC Lounge, so set your expectations accordingly. You won’t be able to snag a free Coke and recharge your phone inside this first in-park Welcome Home Center, but you will get to virtually tour the current Disney Vacation Club offerings through a series of interactive displays, and become a Disney Vacation Club member without leaving the theme park. Current Disney Vacation Club members should stop by to see if there are any current giveaways – last week members recevied Disney Vacation Club Welcome Home Center buttons and a lovely print featuring characters from Inside Out. This Tuesday, July 30 is the first of the Welcome Home Weeks offerings inside DCA. Members can stop by the Golden Vine House between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. to receive a complimentary Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bar, ice cream sandwich or fruit bar.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2023.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

You can purchase these promotional tickets online through the Disneyland website, by phone at 800-506-6720, or in person at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Eligible residents are limited to purchasing five tickets per person, per day.Disney says proof of eligible residency, including valid government-issued photo ID, is required for purchase and admission, which means you can not buy this ticket for out-of-town friends and family.
There is no option to upgrade this ticket to a one-day park hopper ticket or a multi-day ticket. It’s also important to note that theme park reservations are required to use these tickets – you can’t just buy them and walk right in without a reservation. 3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer – June 10 – September 26, 2024
Visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks three weekdays between June 10 and September 26, 2024 for as little as $149 for ages 3-9, or $249 for ages 10 and older using a new discounted ticket which goes on sale May 29, 2024. That represents a savings of up to $219 off the regular price of a three-day, one-park-per-day ticket for children ages 3-9. The adult offer is a $141 discount, and is the same price than the summer 2023 deal.
You can also choose between a ticket good Monday through Thursday OR a slightly more expensive ticket good any day of the week. There are also options to add park hopping and Disney Genie+ service to your ticket at the time of purchase.
This new offer differs from past discouts discounts, so be sure to pay close attention to details before you purchase.
The 3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer is a 3-day, 1-park-per-day ticket that offers admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure:
- The weekday ticket – starting at $149 for ages 3-9; $249 for ages 10 and older. Three weekdays (Mondays through Thursdays only) between June 10 and September 26, 2024
- The any day ticket – starting at $199 for ages 3-9; $299, for ages 10 and older. Three days (any day of the week, including weekends) between June 10 and September 26, 2024
You can use every day of the 3-Day Disneyland Ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can’t use it to enter both parks on the same day unless you add the park-hopper option ($70 per ticket)
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on June 10 and wait until September 26 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that reservations for this category of ticket are not guaranteed for any particular dates, and that a date may sell out in this ticket category though other ticket types have reservations of available. It is probably best to purchase early and make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Each day of use constitutes one full day of use.
Tickets expire on September 26, 2024, and have no holiday blackouts. That means that you can visit on the 4th of July holiday using a weekday ticket, assuming reservations are available.
May purchase up to 15 tickets per eligible person per day. Tickets are nonrefundable, may not be sold or transferred for commercial use and exclude activities/events separately priced. Offer may not be combined with other ticket discounts or promotions. Subject to restrictions and change or cancellation without notice.

2024 Military Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 2 through December 13, 2024. You can book now through December 10, 2024, and travel must be completed by December 14, 2024.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (833) 618-0536 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.
