Writer’s Note, News & Views
We knew Walt Disney World Resort news that folks plan trips around would be coming as we got into Spring, and this past week, Disney has started provided some of those dates that may help you decide when to visit.
Disney often offers up “new” things for “Summer” and, at least around Walt Disney World Resort, Summer usually starts around Memorial Day Weekend. This year, Memorial Day is May 26. On May 27, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will debut its two new shows: of “The Little Mermaid–A Musical Adventure” and “Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After.” The Mermaid show will be performed in the space that formerly was home to “Voyage of The Little Mermaid,” which did not reopen following the global pandemic’s temporary closure of Walt Disney World Resort; it will make use of puppets and live actors, plus digital projections and songs from the animated classic. The Villains show takes up residence in the Sunset Showcase that last was home to Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy (next door to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster). Both shows can now be found in the My Disney Experience app and it is likely the app will eventually list showtimes for each.
Though it is only April, the weather already is turning to what many other parts of the country/northern hemisphere consider summer: daytime high temperatures have started dancing around 90. The real difference between this time of year and actual summer here in Central Florida, though, is that the daily afternoon thundershowers typically do not start for a few more months. Indeed, many days lately, parts of Central Florida are under “Red Flag” warnings for various drought conditions that can give rise to wildfires. If you plan to visit during this time of year, plan for daytime heat (stay hydrated, get the right sunblock, etc.) and cooler evenings (sometimes, but rarely, colder evenings), and be ready for the occasional rainstorm.
There is also some new ticket offer news to share when you get all the way down to the Resort Reservations, Ticket Advice & Special Offers section at the bottom of the Update. Next week, the Update will likely run late in the week, as MousePlanet has been invited to sail on Disney Dream to have our first visit to Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, Disney Cruise Line’s new exclusive destination that debuted last summer in the Bahamas and is visited by Disney ships on select sailings from Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral, Florida. Disney Dream will also be making a stop at Disney’s Castaway Cay, DCL’s original private island in the Bahamas. Highlights are definitely coming to our social media channels before the next Walt Disney World Resort Update.
Okay, on to more news after a fun infographic Disney shared this week…
Both Disney Water Parks Open at The Same Time?
For the first time since before the global pandemic temporarily shut down all of Walt Disney World Resort–indeed, for the first time since back in 2019, both Disney Water Parks will be operating starting May 21, 2025. This news elevates its position in this week’s Update from just a Reminder to news!
As we have previously reported, Disney’s Blizzard Beach is currently open and has started celebrating its 30th anniversary (the actual anniversary was yesterday, April 1). Blizzard Beach will continue to do celebrate and operate through April 30th. Its anniversary celebration includes dance parties, special anniversary food & beverage items “and more frosted fun than ever.” There will also be some family-friendly games with prizes such as snowflake tattoos, wintery-themed rubber ducks and snowy bubbles. Blizzard Beach will still then close on May 1 for seasonal refurbishment, but that is now scheduled to be concluded on May 20th, with the park reopening on May 21, 2025!
As we also previously reported, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is scheduled to reopen on May 1 from its seasonal refurbishment. Disney now says that guests will be able to enjoy both water parks starting May 21 and through September 7. Remember: for those staying at Disney Resorts Collection hotels in 2025, admission to a water park is free on check-in day (details are here on DisneyWorld.com). Disney Water Parks offer free parking for all guests and all of the features of the water parks is presented starting on this page of DisneyWorld.com. Stitch at the page (IYKYK) where information about the seasonal pass for unlimited water park visits through May 23 had been which suggests that seasonal pass offer is not being extended, but the usual ticket purchasing options are available on this page of DisneyWorld.com (and be sure to log in with your Disney credentials, as that will open up Passholder and Disney Vacation Club pricing, if applicable).
For those that prefer visiting a water park at night, H2O Glow After Hours at Typhoon Lagoon returns on select nights between May 23 and September 13, 2025. The “illuminated dance party full of splashy fun, complimentary snacks, and beloved Toy Story pals” also offers up shorter wait times for the attractions compared to the daytime, and it is usually a bit less hot in Central Florida at night (and, indeed, the daily summer thunderstorms usually clear out by sunset too, which is useful if you plan to visit an outdoor water park).

H2O Glow tickets are on sale now for guests of Disney Resort hotels, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels, as well as Shades of Green at Walt Disney World Resort. Tickets go on sale to the general public on April 4 at this page of disneyworld.com or by calling the Disney Reservation Center at (407) 934-7639. This year kids tickets are $42.50, which is half the price of the $85 adult ticket. Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club member discounts are available when logged in with your linked credentials.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin to be Enhanced in 2026
This week, Disney announced that starting in August Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom will close for a major refurbishment and update that will last until some point next year. The attraction will get a new show scene, updated ride vehicles and gameplay enhancements.
Longtime visitors to Magic Kingdom will remember that the omnimover vehicles and track layout for this attraction date all the way back to the early park attraction “If You Had Wings” (sponsored by Eastern Airlines, later named “If You Could Fly,”) and the subsequent brand and sponsor change to “Delta Dreamflight” (and, later, “Take Flight”). When the attraction became Buzz Lightyear’s in 1998, the imagineers gave each car a joystick that allowed riders to rotate their car 360º during most of their ride through the attraction, and installed two fixed-mount toy “laser” guns to shoot at fixed targets along the ride path. Subsequent versions of the attraction (with slightly altered names) that opened in Disneyland and some of the overseas parks used similar ride vehicles, but gave passengers attached-to-the-vehicle hand-held toy guns and other enhancements to the targets along the ride path.
The enhancements coming to Magic Kingdom’s version of the attraction sound like they will provide Magic Kingdom guests with more features than just what the other Disney Parks’ versions have. When it reopens, the Magic Kingdom attraction guests will now be greeted on their adventure by an all-new character, “Buddy,” a friendly “support-bot” robot created by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios to play a key role on the Star Command team. Disney says that Buddy “makes sure departing Space Rangers are fully prepared for their mission, enthusiastically providing encouragement, final system checks on their Star Cruisers and a chance to hone their blaster aim.”

The ride vehicles themselves are getting what Disney calls a “face-lift.” The omnimover cars will feature a new design “inspired by the colors of Buzz Lightyear and Star Command.” Each vehicle will also now come equipped with video monitors that provide real-time scoring updates and other features. Each ride vehicle will also include handheld blasters which Disney says will help younger riders “to participate more in the experience. The two blasters in each car will shoot different colors (making it easier to see who is shooting which target), and the blasters will feature new lighting, sound and vibration effects.
The targets in the attraction today will be upgraded with new technology that will allow them to react and light up when hit. Disney says Imagineers have some other interactions in mind too, and have been play testing the new targets, blasters and gameplay ideas.

This & That & Reminders…
…This week Disney released another piece of new concept art for Magic Kingdom’s new nighttime parade, “Disney Starlight–Dream the Night Away,” the Wish float. Ahead of last week’s Update, Disney released concept art depicting parade units including the Blue Fairy, Peter Pan, Wendy, Elsa, a Princess Float, the family Madrigal from Encanto, and Moana and friends. Disney has said that this new nighttime parade will include nods to the classic Main Street Electrical Parade which was the Magic Kingdom’s last nighttime parade that glowed away back in October 2016, and has made occasional appearances in the California parks as recently as 2022. Disney has said the parade is expected to debut this summer and says that more details will be shared in the “coming months.” It is safe to say that the parade will not debut in conjunction with the opening of “The Little Mermaid–A Musical Adventure” and “Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios–those shows, as noted above, are scheduled to begin performances on May 27.

…REMINDER: The the new lounge coming to the former VIP space above the Spaceship Earth exit overlooking the World Celebration neighborhood at EPCOT, GEO-82, is expected to open later this year The new location will be adults-only, and will require advance reservations for guests 21 and older. The venue will serve up “innovative cocktails” and “globally influenced small plates.” A pirates-themed tavern is expected this year over in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom as well, and it is likely that its name and some details will be released in the near future.
…REMINDER: The new version of Test Track at EPCOT is expected to open later this year. Exterior construction at the site remains visible, especially at the entrance. It would not be surprising to see some additional bits of information released as this month continues.
…REMINDER: Easter is April 20th, and Disney Parks Blog has published its Foodie Guide. As we shared last week, the festive Easter Eggs created by the culinary team at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa are on display in the main lobby through Easter Sunday. Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resort displays should also now be on display until Easter.

Hop into the Easter foodie guide to see all the egg-stra special offerings at @WaltDisneyWorld and @Disneyland!🐣🌷 https://t.co/WF3iUC5Qwz pic.twitter.com/9cmQmUzZja

…REMINDER: The 2025 EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival is underway through June 2. As we have seen in recent annual editions of the festival, the 30th anniversary edition of the festival features topiaries, gardens, foods, beverages, merchandise, and more, including the three times nightly Garden Rocks Concert Series at the America Gardens Theatre (the lineup is published here on DisneyWorld.com and changes, when they happen, will appear there and the My Disney Experience app; dining packages are available for guaranteed seating at Friday through Monday night shows). This year’s main entrance topiary display is a brand new one featuring Moana, Maui, Heihei and Pua. Disney Parks Blog has published a Foodie Guide: Disney says there are 180 bites to try at this year’s Festival, including new items and returning favorites. As shown in the Passport, the Garden Graze is back: guests partake of a “food stroll” by purchasing five items from the list of 10 in the Festival Passport, get their corresponding stamps, and then receive an exclusive treat from the Pineapple Promenade. The Foodie Guide also highlights kid-friendly picks on the menus around the festival.

…REMINDER (time has run out): Inside the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, It’s Tough to Be a Bug closed forever on March 17, 2025, to make way for Zootopia: Better Zoogether! which is expected to open in “winter 2025.” Closures over in DinoLand U.S.A. to make way for the Tropical Americas land scheduled to open in 2027, got underway on January 13, 2025. TriceraTop Spin, the Fossil Fun Games, and the Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures gift shop are all now closed forever. The rest of DinoLand USA, including the DINOSAUR attraction and Restaurantosaurus remain open for now, but will eventually close as the Tropical Americas construction expands.
…UPDATED REMINDER: The last opportunity to experience Muppet*Vision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is June 7, 2025. That is also true for the Grand Avenue Courtyard restaurants PizzeRizzo and Mama Melrose’s. On June 8, 2025, those venues will close permanently to make way for construction of the new Monsters, Inc. themed land. At the South by Southwest presentation last month, Disney shared some new concept art for the flying doors-themed coaster coming to the expanded area. And, while the Monsters are displacing the Muppets from this part of the park and bringing an end to the last major project Muppets creator Jim Henson personally worked on, the Muppets will be displacing Aerosmith from Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at some point in the future that we very well could hear some attraction closing dates for in the coming months.
Grand Avenue Courtyard will be incorporated into the future Monsters, Inc. land, so its remaining venues will be closing June 7, 2025. Photos by Alan S. Dalinka.

…And Disney shared that there is a bunch of new Pixar merchandise available in the parks.
…REMINDER. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom is closed for a year-long refurbishment. Since Disney has announced its significant park expansion projects beyond BTM, we expect this refurbishment project could also lay the groundwork for that further expansion, but Disney has not elaborated as yet. We expect that the Walt Disney World Railroad at Magic Kingdom will need to close to make way for the expansion project, but Disney has not yet announced a closing date for it, and the My Disney Experience app still shows it operating during its usual hours. Also in the Frontierland vicinity, in at least in some of the area where the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island now are, Disney plans to build its new Cars-themed attraction, and at the recent South by Southwest presentation, Disney shared some new concept art for the new ride vehicles and car personalities created by Pixar.

…REMINDER. Disney D23 announced the 2025 return of Destination 23 to Walt Disney World Resort. Billed as “the biggest Disney fan event of 2025,” Destination D23: A Journey Around the Worlds of Disney will be August 29-31, 2025. This edition will be held at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, and D23 says the event has more than doubled in size. A block of rooms is available for reservation at: https://www.mydisneygroup.com/destd25/. D23 Gold Membership seems to be required for ticket purchases, though the on-sale date and information has not yet been published; it is expected this spring. Gold Membership tiers are in effect in 2025, and effect existing Gold Members upon their renewals. Read more about all that, on this page of D23.com.

…UPDATED REMINDER: Disney Vacation Club Moonlight Magic nights are back in 2025. Remaining dates and locations are:
- EPCOT: April 30 and July 17
- Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park: May 20, June 9, and August 11
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios: September 1
Registration for events is required. Registration for Spring Events has closed. For the following Summer Season events, be aware that Early Registration is May 15, 2025 and General Registration is May 22, 2025.
Summer Season Events
- EPCOT: 7/17/25
- Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park: 8/11/25
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios: 9/1/25
Registration is complimentary for eligible DVC members. “Eligible” generally includes only members that purchased their membership points directly from Disney, and their guests. For Early Registration, an eligible member also must have a Disney Resort reservation at a DVC property (which includes Disney’s Vero Beach Resort) or any of the other Disney owned/operated hotels, with the party size on the resort registration finalized a few specified days before the Early Registration window opens. Full details and reservation requirements are on this page of DVC’s website, and that is the page where the RSVP link appears on registration dates. Members must enter their DVC Member number prior to entering the virtual waiting room on registration days, and, as of the Spring 2025 Early Registration, it seems that entering the DVC Member number limited entry into the virtual waiting room to one position per number no matter how many different internet browser sessions were used.
Once successfully registered for an event, the DVC member designated as attending in the registration form is the one that must be present at check-in to check-in the entire party, and that member must have their digital member identification (preferably loaded in their device’s digital wallet) and photo I.D. The entire party must check in together, and early entry to the park before the event’s designated “mix-in” time requires a separate park admission (and park reservation for applicable ticket and pass-types).
…Disney Dreamers Academy Class of 2025 concluded their Walt Disney World program over the weekend. The 18th annual edition of the 5 day event kicked off with the Dreamers Class participating in the traditional parade (see the Reel on Facebook) through Magic Kingdom: 100 high school students selected from across the country, along with actor Tyler James Williams from ABC’s hit show “Abbott Elementary” who was this year’s official “DREAMbassador.” The event itself is a transformational mentoring program at Walt Disney World designed to inspire high school students from varying backgrounds and communities to “dream big and pursue their goals.” Throughout the event, the students had the opportunity to interact with Williams and other celebrities, business executives, entertainers, educators and others during fun, interactive career workshops and sessions while also spending time making magical memories in the Disney theme parks. The class of 100 students was selected from thousands of nationwide applicants for participation in the once-in-a-lifetime mentoring program at Walt Disney World. The program is designed to assist young people in identifying and pursuing their dreams. Along with a parent or guardian, the 100 students each received an all-expense-paid trip to Walt Disney World to participate in the program. More information about Disney Dreamers Academy is available at DisneyDreamersAcademy.com, and if you are a high school student interested in applying for the Class of 2026, keep an eye on that site, and we try to note the application dates in our Updates too.

The new bar was designed by Dublin architects O’Donnell O’Neill with bespoke bar lighting by Mullins in Monaghan, Ireland; mosaic floor tiles beneath bar stools; gold-gilt lettering on the zinc bar roof; and elaborate turquoise-glazed tiles created by the U.K’s 150-year-old Craven Dunnill Group specializing in heritage ceramics. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today! As always, we remind our readers that Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. Historically, non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks.
And, there are a few more offers for locals too…
A general Florida resident theme park ticket offer is available on this page of DisneyWorld.com which starts at $119 plus tax for a one day ticket and can be as low as $72/day plus tax for a four day ticket (before the various add-ons). As a date-based ticket, the first date of use has to be selected when purchased and users of a Florida resident ticket will be required to provide proof of residency either at the time of purchase or at a park ticket window prior to first use. If you are looking for a start date that gets as low as that advertised $72/day plus tax, advance the calendar all the way out to August.
The Florida Resident Discover Disney Ticket is now also available on this page of DisneyWorld.com. The Discover Disney Ticket is a special 4-Day Ticket for $240 plus tax ($60/day plus tax) valid for use until May 23, 2025, with an advance park reservation. A 3-Day version is also available for $225 plus tax. Reservations are limited and subject to availability of reservations allocated to this ticket as determined by Disney, and park capacity. These tickets can be used on consecutive or nonconsecutive days, and Park Hopper and water park options may be purchased for additional benefits. Usual residency proof required too.
Caribe Royale Orlando, a resort fairly close to Walt Disney World Resort, offers year-round Florida and Georgia resident rates as well as seasonal offers for quick getaways. Its new Book Early and Save Offer is for guests who like to plan ahead to save on a summer getaway. From now until April 13, for stays from May 23 through September 10, guests can receive 20% off stays of 3 nights or more plus a $25 daily dining credit. Other offers include a reduced rate for Spring Break stays now through May 22, plus ongoing discounts for military, first responders, educators and nurses. See all offers on this page of the resort’s website.
Finally, if you are considering becoming an Annual Passholder and are a Florida Resident, Disney has reduced the down payment requirement. Floriday residents pay only $99 down (that’s 50% of the down payment) on a Walt Disney World Annual Pass, plus, 12 monthly payments of $34-$130 depending on pass type and 0% APR. Details are on this page of DisneyWorld.com, including that you must be at least 18 years old and have valid proof of Florida residence.
