Disneyland Resort Update for June 29, 2026

June 28, 2026 by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix

Pirates of the Caribbean reopens with updated scene

Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean attraction reopened last Friday following a lengthy refurbishment. In addition to the usual repairs and updates that come with refurbishments, Disney announced that Imagineers had brought some “new magic” to the iconic grotto scene.

Before the update, a skeletal pirate sat atop a pile of gold. Photo courtesy D23.

In the original version, a skeletal pirate sat perched atop a pile of gold in a treasure-filled cave. During the refurbishment, Disney replaced that figure with a new Audio-Animatronic pirate. Through the use of projection mapping, the new pirate appears to switch between human and skeleton as he examines a coin from the treasure chest in his lap.

Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland park in Anaheim, Calif., has reopened with new magic to one of the attraction’s classic scenes: the treasure-filled grotto. Figures with projected faces are notoriously difficult to photograph, and I’m reserving judgement on the effect until I see the new character in person this week, but online critics have been quite vocal in their dislike for this change. On Instagram, user Sunny Neitzel said, “I miss the old skeleton! Respectfully the projected faces just look cheap and fake.”

Aesthetics aside, I question what story point is being advanced by this change to this particular scene. The pirates we’ve seen until this point in the ride are all skeletons. It’s not clear why this figure is different, or what causes his transformation. Is this the Curse of the Aztec Gold as introduced in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise, or does it merely represent the accelerated passage of time? And how does this scene fit with the next figure we see, a caged pirate who seemingly transforms from skeleton to living as we enter the ship battle scene?

If this is a nod to the cursed Aztec treasure from “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” reader Michael Levey points out a major inconsistency. In a comment posted to Instagram he writes, “Everyone seems to be forgetting that the pirates only turned into skeletons in the moonlight in the film. This dude is in an underground cave, so story isn’t so important anymore Disney…?”

Others argue that the introduction of a living character at this point in the ride disrupts the storyline. Instagram user Jason Cryer wrote, “This is COMPLETELY WRONG for the tone of this ride. This iconic quiet moment was the perfect scene setter for the excitement to come. This is a massive step back.”

Disneyland celebrates America 250 with three nights of fireworks

Those visiting the Disneyland Resort this week have three chances to see the “Disney’s Celebrate America! – A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky” fireworks show. Weather permitting, the show will run at 9:35 p.m. on July 3, 4 and 5.

While Sleeping Beauty Castle provides a lovely view of the show, great viewing – and lighter crowds – can be found in front of “it’s small world” as well. Happy Independence Day!

Soarin’ Across America opens this week

Disney California Adventure will finally debut Soarin’ Across America this week, following it’s May premiere in Walt Disney World. The updated attraction film is part of Disney Celebrates America initiative, and takes riders to 13 locations across the United States.

Soarin’ wraps up a limited run of the Soarin’ Over California version on June 30. The ride will be closed July 1, and will reopen as Soarin’s Across America on July 2.

Earl of Sandwich soft opens in Downtown Disney

The new permanent Earl of Sandwich location is now in soft-opening phase in Downtown Disney Anaheim. An official grand opening featuing Luke Montagu, the 12th Earl of Sandwich, is scheduled for July 15. The eatery brings back the classic Earl of Sandwich menu from the previous three Downtown Disney incarnations, plus The Carvery and The Pub. The Carvery offers freshly-sliced pastrami sandwiches from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily, and The Pub offers a selection of adult beverages, cocktails and frozen drinks.

An all-new Earl of Sandwich is now open in Downtown Disney District at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif. Menu selections include The Original 1762, The Full Montagu and The Holiday Turkey, as well as other freshly baked sandwiches on artisan breads, soups, salads, sides, breakfast items and desserts. (Christian Thompson/Disneyland Resort)

Disney has not yet said when Gordon Ramsay at The Carnaby, another new restaurant located above the Earl of Sandwich, will open.

Oogie Boogie tracking

Tickets for the 2026 Oogie Boogie Bash events went on sale two weeks ago, and ticket sales appear to be lower than in the past several years.

At publication time, the events on September 6, October 11 and October 31 have sold out. Looking at the calendar and knowing which dates sold out during the Magic Key presale, we expect the following dates will sell out next:

  • Sunday, October 4
  • Sunday, October 18
  • Sunday, October 25

Tickets are also still available for the member-exclusive D23 Night at Oogie Boogie Bash on September 27. We will continue to track ticket sales each week through the season.

Now on sale: Oogie Boogie Bash VIP Tour

If you’d like to upgrade your Halloween Time visit to the Disneyland Resort, or you simply MUST attend the event on one of the sold-out Oogie Boogie Bash nights, you can now book a VIP Tour with admission to the after-hours event. Just as with the event tickets, the tour cost depends on which night you attend. 2026 tours start at $7500, and run up to $9000 for Halloween night. Tours can accommodate up to 8 guests total, regardless of age.

The Oogie Boogie Bash VIP Tour includes expedited entrance to attractions and entertainment during the event, including Villains Grove. MousePlanet file photo.

The tour includes admission to Oogie Boogie Bash for the entire group, with two changes: the ticket is valid starting at 2:00 p.m. instead of 3:00 p.m., and comes with park-hopper access. Since the festivities of Oogie Boogie Bash do not kick off until 6:00 p.m., those on the VIP tour could choose to start their evening in Disneyland to catch the Halloween attractions there before heading over to Disney California Adventure.

Once inside Disney California Adventures, guests on the Oogie Boogie Bash VIP Tour receive a number of perks during the event, including:

  • Expedited access to attractions
  • Expedited access to select Treat Trails and Villains Grove.
  • VIP Lounge Experience at Carthay Circle Restaurant with:
    • A selection of savory bites to refuel for the night
    • Up to 2 complimentary alcoholic beverages per Guest age 21 and over
    • Unlimited nonalcoholic beverages
    • A private VIP Tours Character Greeting
    • Private viewing for
    • A VIP Tours trick-or-treat opportunity with an assortment of sweet treats

Of course, you’ll also have the personal attention of a VIP Tour Guide, who will help you access all of the treats and perks.

As with most VIP tours, this one comes with complimentary valet parking for up to 2 vehicles at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, plus a themed Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party VIP Tour pin and treat bag for each member of the party. Finally, your party will also have the ability to purchase exclusive VIP Tour merchandise, which is only available to those who book a tour.

Reservations must be made by phone at (714) 300-7710, or email us. At press time, tours were available for all event nights, including the three events which have sold out to the general public.

For a limited time our travel partners at Get Away Today are offering this ticket at $48 per day.

This and That

…This is the final week of operations for Jamba (formerly Jamba Juice) in Downtown Disney. The location closes Sunday, July 5. The location will be replaced by a new Bopo Go cafe.

  • Gay Days [Unofficial event] – September 18-20, 2026. Details on the event website.
  • The Holidays at Disneyland – Begin November 18, 2026

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Tickets, Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 8, 2025.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
